Former HS Student Files Notice After Allegedly Being Hit by Car in ‘Promposal’ Gone Wrong

A former Arizona College Prep High School student has filed a claim notice in advance of a lawsuit against the school after he was involved in a "promposal" gone wrong. William Vannasap was a senior at the school when he said he was innocently involved in a vehicle accident that left him with physical and emotional injuries.

Vannasap's claim states that the high school, the Chandler Unified School District, the city of Chandler, Arizona, and a school resource officer are all culpable, and he wants a settlement of $1 million. His family wants justice and says he will suffer for the rest of his life.

The teen appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The accident occurred in April in the parking lot of Arizona College Prep. Vannasap was leaving school for the day on his motorcycle when he was involved in a serious crash with a student driving a Porsche, according to 12 News. The crash reportedly occurred because the other driver purposefully drove through an intersection. Sadly, the Porsche collided with Vannasap's motorcycle, and he was seriously injured.

A school resource officer apparently planned to take part in the stunt.

Per the claim filed by Vannasap's lawyer, April Speelmon, the crash happened because of a stunt.

"It really was a dangerous plan," she told News 12.

The claim alleges that the student driving the Porsche planned the proposal to attend prom with the help of the student resource officer. The driver planned to drive through an intersection without stopping at the sign, and the officer was to pull him over as if he were in trouble. But instead, he would pull out a sign asking the female pasenger in the car to prom.

Sadly, that is not what happened.

The driver's plan was to pick his girlfriend up in a Porsche and jump a stop sign in the car park before being pulled over by the school’s law enforcement officer, who was in on the ruse. But instead, he sped through a spot sign hitting the motorcyclist who suffered injuries. The driver of the Porsche apparently didn't expect any other vehicles to be in the parking lot at the time of the stunt, and the claim said Vannasap was an innocent victim as a result.

Footage of the crash obtained by 12 News reportedly shows the car speeding through the intersection and hitting Vannasap with enough force that the car's airbags were deployed. Vannasap appears to fly through the air.

The video is difficult to watch.

After the crash, the driver and school had conflicting stories.

According to the claim, the school principal and resource officer were aware of the plan. The school resource officer, however, reportedly said he didn't know the student was planning to speed; instead, he thought the driver planned to make a "slow roll" through the intersection. The principal claimed he knew nothing of the plan.

"Those adults at the school should have said 'no, we're not going to do this,'" Speelmon said.

In the newly released footage, a police officer's vehicle is clearly sitting in the parking lot near the stop sign.

The unnamed driver disputed the principal and officer's stories and alleged they both knew about the plan and agreed to it.

Vannasap will allegedly have long-term effects from the accident.

His sister, Mayci Vannasap, shared the news story on her Facebook page with a quote that reads, "JUSTICE for my little brother who will have life long injuries from this crash! So grateful that he is alive but they need to be held accountable."

"Thank you GOD he's OK.. he's blessed to be ALIVE. Yes definitely agreed the school & resource officer needs to be held accountable," a friend commented on the Facebook post.

William Vannasap's lawyer told 12 News she wants the school, district, and city held responsible and that the teen "sustained a traumatic brain injury. He's been emotionally very harmed by this incident."

Speelmon added that the student driver is not involved in the claim but she is working on a separate claim against him.
