Seven-year-old Olivia Grace Floyd died on January 29 after being mauled to death by her grandparents’ 4-year-old Rottweiler. Her grandparents, Stephen Christopher Kachmar and Penny Lee Bashlor of Waynesboro County, Virginia, now face murder charges in her death.
According to her obituary, Olivia was a "spunky, sweet and caring little girl who got along with everyone and loved life.”
The family pet mauled the little girl to death.
On January 29, authorities responded to a report of a domestic dog attack at Olivia's grandparents’ home on Parker Heights Road just before 2:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found that the dog who attacked the little girl lived at the home, People reported.
Olivia, who lived in Fishersville, Virginia, was rushed to Augusta Health where she later died of her injuries, according to a news release from the Waynesboro County Police Department. An unidentified woman also was injured in the attack but was treated and released.
The 4-year-old dog was seized and has since been euthanized, according to the Staunton News Leader.
Both grandparents could face up to 70 years in prison.
According to a joint news release from the Waynesboro County Police Department and Waynesboro Commonwealth's attorney's office, Kachmar and Bashlor each were indicted by a special grand jury on May 13 on the following charges, all of which are felonies: non-capital murder, involuntary manslaughter, child abuse that involves serious injury, cruelty/injure child, and serious injuries to a person involving a vicious dog.
Both Kachmar, 60, and Bashlor, 64, could face up to 70 years in prison if found guilty and are being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
Olivia's parents also are being charged in their daughter's death.
Olivia's parents, Brooks Anthony Floyd and Alicia Rene Floyd, are each being charged with cruelty/injure child, which could carry a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Her father, Brooks Floyd, 39, is being held at Middle River Regional Jail. Olivia’s mother, Alicia Floyd, 37, was released on a personal recognizance bond on Friday.
