Laci Peterson’s Case Has New Details That Could Mean a New Sentence for Scott Peterson

Long before there was social media or, more specifically, TikTok, to make armchair detectives out of the internet, the Laci Peterson case dominated 24-hour news networks. The expectant mom, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her disappearance and death, was reported missing in late December 2002 in Modesto, Calif. Her husband, Scott Peterson, was later found guilty of her murder.

Now, however, there are allegedly new details set to come out that might totally change the story and Peterson’s verdict. According to the New York Post, a documentary plans to reveal the new information about the case. Peterson was found guilty of his wife’s murder when a jury agreed that he likely got rid of her body using his small fishing boat. But it’s that theory that apparently led to new questions and ideas about what actually happened.

There is alleged evidence that says Scott Peterson is innocent.

The A&E documentary Scott Peterson: The New Evidence dives into the case more than 20 years after Laci’s body was found and Peterson was found guilty of her murder and the disposal of her body. Per the documentary’s description, the idea is to “revisit the investigation through the lens of newly surfaced evidence, presenting a fresh and deeply detailed perspective on a case that has remained both high-profile and deeply polarizing.”

Peterson was painted as a man who chose to kill his pregnant wife and their unborn son to pursue a public relationship with massage therapist Amber Frey, who he had an affair with at the time of Laci’s death. The documentary will show, per the New York Post, that Peterson throwing his wife’s body from his small fishing boat would have caused the vessel to capsize and that it might not have been possible after all.

Since this is one idea the prosecution’s case relied on to prove that Peterson disposed of his wife’s body from the boat and that’s why her body eventually washed up after her disappearance and death, it could poke holes in the case in a major way. As of now, Peterson remains in prison, though. In 2004, a jury recommended the death penalty for Peterson. However, in 2020, his death sentence was overturned.

To many, there is too much evidence stacked up against Scott Peterson.

Whatever the A&E documentary proves or at least suggests in relation to Peterson’s case and his wife and unborn son’s death might not be enough to steer the court of public opinion. The case is still discussed among true crime buffs and those who want to examine what happened more closely. A Reddit thread about the case and evidence against Peterson does just that. And, while some look at Laci’s murder as unsolved with Peterson being wrongfully convicted, arguably more people are pleased with what happened during the trial.

One user wrote that, although there was not enough physical evidence in the case to find Peterson guilty, “there’s enough overall evidence (no matter which kind) to convict him every day of the week.”

Another user pointed to other evidence presented in the case.

“There is also the fact that he was headed for the border with $12,000 in cash, camping equipment, dyed hair, and a different car on the day that her body was found,” they commented. “I don’t believe for a second that someone stalked the house and framed Scott. What is the motive? And HOW did they know where Scott was headed? She was home when he left.”

Even if the boat theory is debunked, it doesn’t mean everything will change for Peterson now.

Scott Peterson is serving a life sentence.

According to Fox News, Peterson remains in prison in California and former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani doesn’t see that changing. Rahmani told the outlet that, although there is still the theory being pushed that burglars kidnapped Laci and framed Peterson, there is enough evidence otherwise to uphold Peterson’s original conviction.
