Maryland Boy, 7, Allegedly ‘Hung’ in School Bathroom in ‘Horseplaying’ Accident

Kids messing around at school is a given, especially during unsupervised times like restroom breaks. Just ask any teacher. However, a Maryland boy was allegedly “hung” in a school bathroom during a “horseplaying” accident — and his mom is speaking out.

Neither the boy nor his parents was identified by local news media. The student’s mom, however, detailed the November 15 incident at C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School in Waldorf. Now, they still have “so many questions left unanswered” after their son’s traumatizing experience.

The boy was allegedly 'hung' at school by an older student.

The 7-year-old boy’s mom took to social media on November 17 to share her side of the story, WUSA News 9 reported. That post then went viral.

“My child who is a second grader was hung in the boys’ bathroom by a fourth grader,” she detailed. “I received the most traumatizing phone call from the school stating that my child was being rushed to children’s hospital in NW … I’m feeling anger and seeing red, but my son is here by the grace of GOD, and I will forever be thankful!”

His mom told WUSA News 9 the second-grader was 'traumatized.'

“If you look at my son, he has marks under his eyes, like blood vessels, he still has bruises on his neck from being choked,” the boy’s mom told the news outlet.

She added, “He’s traumatized. It’s going to take time. This is not something he’s going to just get over overnight.”

The mother said she wants new policies in place at the school.

The mother detailed the interaction between her son and the fourth-grade student who injured him.

“My son did tell me that when they were in the bathroom, he said that the little boy told him, ‘I’m going to show you how I did people back in the day.’ … It’s not telling how many other kids this has happened to,'” she told WUSA News 9.

“I want to see a policy in place. I would like to see at least hallway monitors,” she continued.

The mom added, “I want to know why is a fourth-grader in the same hallway or the same bathroom as a second-grader. Most schools have them divided. I feel like this is very unacceptable.”

C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School released a statement about the 'horseplaying' accident.

On November 15, the school’s principal released a statement about what happened.

“Two of our students were reportedly horseplaying in a school bathroom when one student’s jacket got caught on a stall door hook,” Principal Carrie Burke wrote in the release. “The student was not able to free themselves and the other student involved was also not able to help them.”

The statement continued, “This student left the bathroom to seek help from staff and reported the incident to administrators. Administrators responded and were able to assist, but staff called 911 for additional precautionary medical support.”

Additionally, the principal praised staff for their response.

In her message, Burke also thanked all involved in handling the accident.

She concluded, “I appreciate the quick thinking of the student who reported their classmate needed help, our staff for calmly managing a schedule disruption, and our students who followed our directions this afternoon so emergency medical services (EMS) could enter the school and provide care for the student.”
