There are no mass kidnappings in Virginia, despite rampant TikTok videos claiming so, according to state police. “Virginia State Police is aware of multiple social media posts raising concerns about missing children across the Commonwealth of Virginia,” the agency shared in a statement, per People. “Virginia State Police is not investigating any reports of mass abductions in Virginia, nor is there evidence of mass abductions occurring in Virginia.”
As 13NewsNow reported, videos on TikTok falsely claimed there had been a “mass abduction” of children since August 1, 2025, in Virginia. This, in turn, sparked conspiracies on the social media platform.
Virginia has reported more missing children than other states on the website for National Center for Missing and Exploited Kids, or NCMEC. However, this is because the Virginia state police “forwards EVERY missing child case to NCMEC,” according to a statement from the agency.
“According to NCMEC, Virginia is the most pro-active in sending cases to their website,” the statement read, per 13NewsNow. “Virginia does this to centralize missing children’s cases so they can all be reviewed in one location. Many other clearinghouses post their cases to their own website. In Virginia, the MCC uses NCMEC as the clearinghouse site.”
During the week of August 3 to August 9, for example, 88 children were reported missing in the state, People reported. This is actually down from the 2025 weekly average of 98.
A total of 3,274 children have been reported missing in Virginia, as of August 18, the magazine noted. The majority of them are runways, with only 4% remaining missing. Additionally, Virginia State Police only issued two AMBER Alerts so far in 2025, and both kids were found.
