Her Kids Went Missing in 2014, Now This Mom Has Been Arrested for Murder After Release From Psych Hospital

Catherine Hoggle claimed she took her children to a new child care facility before they went missing back in 2014. But when it was time for the children’s father, Troy Turner, to pick them up, she reportedly refused to tell him where they were. Hoggle was the last person to see her two kids, Sarah Hoggle, 3, and Jacob Hoggle, 2, alive. For more than a decade, their father and other loved ones hoped to find them. Sadly, they never did. Then, on July 31, 2025, a grand jury indicted Hoggle on first-degree murder charges in connection with her children’s presumed deaths.

According to a press release from Maryland State’s Attorney John McCarthy, police arrested Hoggle on August 1, after learning doctors had discharged her from a mental health facility. People reported in 2017 that Hoggle had long struggled with mental illness. Prosecutors charged her with murder in September 2017, but later dropped the charges because the court ruled her unfit to stand trial.

Turner told People in 2017, that Hoggle refused to give him any information about Sarah and Jacob’s whereabouts. “My job is to find my kids,” he said, “and bring them home.”

Turner created the Facebook page “FindSarahFindJacob” in the hopes of gathering information about his missing children.

“We will never give up. Working everyday to bring our babies home where they deserve to be. If you even remotely think you know something or can help in any way, we remain open to all possibilities. Again we cannot thank you enough for the continued support,” Turner shared on the page weeks before Hoggle’s arrest.

Hoggle appeared in court on August 4, the Associated Press reported. Her attorney, David Felsen, challenged her arrest, noting prosecutors had no new evidence against his client.

“These are the exact same charges that were dismissed in 2022,” he said.

Per AP, after ruling Hoggle was incompetent to stand trial in 2017, state law gave authorities five years to declare her competent to stand trial. If they did not, all criminal charges would be dismissed.

Hoggle reportedly has a history of schizophrenia and taking antipsychotic medication. Although a judge dropped the charges in 2022 because of the five-year limit, the court ordered that she remain involuntarily in a psychiatric facility because the court deemed her a danger to herself or others. It is unclear why doctors released her.
