A mother of two from Venezuela is dead after reportedly having a cosmetic weight-loss procedure and not being provided sufficient medical care when she experienced complications after the surgery. Ana Rosa Mavarez Rivero, 31, had a laser liposuction procedure performed at a shopping center in CumanĂĄ, Venezuela, according to the Daily Mail.
On Saturday night, Rivero traveled to a clinic in the Marina Plaza Ambulatory Surgery Unit, and sadly, never returned home to her 11- and 8-year-old children. The procedure was meant to be less invasive than standard liposuction, while trimming fat, shaping the body, and sculpting cellulite. Sadly, that was not the case for Rivero.
The day after her surgery, Rivero was reportedly experiencing complications.
The day after her procedure at around 10 p.m., she began having breathing problems, the New York Post reported. Her family called for an ambulance. Tragically, there was an oxygen shortage at the hospital, and not only that, but at 2:45 a.m., the family was still waiting for an emergency vehicle.
âIâm filming in CumanĂĄ and we canât get an ambulance,â a family member said in a video detailing the ordeal. âVen911 doesnât have oxygen so we canât get out of here.â
Rivero's post-surgery care was sub-par, according to her mother.
Petra Rivero, Riveroâs mother, said she complained of severe pain but was not given medicine to treat the discomfort. Rivero had her own device at the facility to reduce swelling but nurses refused to use it, the Daily Mail reports.
Rivero started convulsing at around 10 p.m. Eventually, she was seen by her surgeon Dr. Alexander Larrochelle at 12:30 a.m., at which point he intubated her, the Daily Mail reported.
Her surgeon was later arrested.
By the time Rivero made it to the hospital, she was admitted with no vital signs. Rivero was pronounced dead at 4 a.m., according to the New York Post. Larrochelle visited a local police station on Sunday to provide a statement. He was arrested later that day.
Rivero's mother said Larrochelle and his team were not honest about her daughter's condition.
The mother said her daughterâs death certificate shows her time of death at 11 p.m. She claims Larrochelle and his staff attempted to convince the family that she was still alive. This is why the family was still trying to find an emergency vehicle until the early hours of the morning. When she did arrive at the second facility, her death was confirmed.
Rivero's mother plans to fight for her daughter.
âI am going to fight for my daughter, because she was not an animal. And just as it happened to my daughter, it has happened to many,â she said. âAnd it's going to keep happening if they don't retaliate with that bum. That's a butcher shop they have there.â
