‘We’ll Honor Your Name Every Day’: Mom of 5 Mourns Death of 8-Year-Old Who Choked on Grape & Died

Losing a child is a pain no parents should ever have to endure. Whether their child suffered through an illness or the death comes unexpectedly, nothing can prepare a person for having to live without someone they’d sacrifice anything for. When a child dies, it affects so many people, and entire communities often band together as a support system. Texas 8-year-old Nicholas Gray died on February 10, 2026, after choking on a grape at school. More than a month later, students, teachers, relatives, and friends gathered at a park for a bubble release to share and honor the sweet little boy.

Nicholas choked during snack time at school.

The third grader choked on a grape during snack time at Pomona Elementary School, KHOU reported. Staff tried to dislodge the grape and called 911 for help. Sadly, the piece of fruit was too deep, and no one could reach it. Nicholas died at an area hospital a short time later. It was a sad day for the entire Alvin Independent School District family.

“His classmates were present during this incident, and they tried to help him,” Nicholas’ mom, Kenzie Gray, told KTRK. “They ran out and said, ‘Nicholas is choking.’ Everybody tried to help him.”

The Grays made a decision no parent ever wants to make.

Nicholas choked on February 9, and although doctors did their best to save him, his parents faced a gut-wrenching decision.

“His body, it couldn’t handle anymore – the medicines, the machines, and the tubes everywhere. His body just couldn’t withstand that, and so his father and I had to make a very tough decision to allow him to be at rest,” Kenzie Gray told KTRK.

Nicholas’ mom wanted to honor her son in a special way on March 20.

Kenzie Gray told the crowd the family chose a bubble release at a park so people of all ages could participate.

“Bubbles represent lightheartedness and fun, and that’s exactly who my son is,” Kenzie Gray said. “He’s lighthearted and fun, and he has a smile that can light up the world.”

Nicholas’ father, Nathan Gray Jr., shared a message with the crowd.

“I just ask that anytime you think of Nicholas, you think of positivity,” he said, per KHOU. “He was a gift to us all… he was truly my angel.”

Kenzie Gray enjoyed every moment mothering Nicholas. She and her husband have four children who will all miss Nicholas.

“I’m so very grateful and so proud… proud is an understatement to be Nicholas Gray’s mother,” she shared.

She added that no one will ever forget him. “I want you to know that in your absence, we’ll never forget about you. We’ll live in your name, and we’ll honor your name every day,” Kenzie Gray said.

What a beautiful message for Nicholas’ friends and classmates. We hope they’ll all keep the sweet little boy close to their hearts and continue to support his family as they get to know their new normal.
