Our societal fascination with murder is undeniable. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill concluded that people are drawn to these stories because of their concerns about the legal system and the thrill of solving a mystery. For me, personally, I think it’s because we all have an inner fear of it happening to us. We hear day in and day out about heinous crimes people suffer at the hands of others, and I think on some basic level we all wonder what led a person to such a terrifying end — and even more, how we can avoid a similar fate. At least, that’s what I think, especially as a mom who is terrified of leaving her son too soon.
Sadly, one mom, Christina Burdette, 34, left her 3- and 6-year-old kids far too soon after she was found dead in Atlantic City, New Jersey, according to People. Police stated they arrived on the scene after a call was placed about an unresponsive woman who was found in a New Jersey residence. The Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that the death was a homicide, but did not determine the official cause of death in the release.
Burdette’s family told 6 ABC that her body was covered in visible bruises and wrapped in gauze.
“They said she looked like she was in a fight,” the victim’s sister, Nicole Burdette, told the outlet. The family said they don’t “want to point fingers,” but they feel the situation is “very sketchy.” The father of Burdette’s children died a few years ago, and strangely enough, her body was found at the residence of a relative of the father. Her sister is mystified as to why she would have even been there.
“She didn’t bother anybody. She was mainly about her children,” Nicole told the outlet. “You would have thought, because she was so to herself and so angelic and her own little person, she would have died from old age.”
Police have yet to make any arrests or announce charges. Authorities are asking the public to come forward with any information they may have.
“If you know the victim and knew of her whereabouts in the days and weeks leading up to her death, we ask that you call Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crime Unit at 609-909-7666 or go to the Prosecutor’s Office Website at ACPO.Tips, and provide information by filling out the form anonymously on the Submit a Tip page,” the news release reads.
