Why Potty Training Consistency Is So Important

Although we are finished with potty training, one thing I have learned is that consistency is important to reaching your goal. Learning to potty train is a totally new milestone for your child and to help them fall into the routine of things, it is best to repeat the same behaviors daily for success! Consistency is key in teaching toddlers new behaviors.

Here are a few tips to help you keep things consistent for your child during their potty training journey:

Go at your child's pace. To keep things going well and consistent, it is best to learn your child's pace of learning potty training and respect that. As a parent, we may feel the need to try to rush things along, but this is a very new concept for your child. Also, it is good to know that each child does have their own unique pace. Every child is different and even if your first child trained very quickly, your second child may not train as fast.

Praise and be positive. As a parent, you have the key to motivate your child during the potty training journey. There will be ups and downs, but as long as you stay positive, your child will want to keep trying and will want to succeed. Accidents are totally normal though and if an accident does happen, don't make a big deal out of it. Simply say we will try again next time or work on it together!

Be patient when things get tough. Learning to potty train can be stressful on a toddler and it is important to be as patient as you can. We know that every child learns at their own pace, but some may even regress, and this is normal! It is in your best interest to be the best cheerleader for your child during these tough times and to reassure them that you will do this together as a team.

Set a motivating and fun ritual to stay consistent. Every night before bedtime, we would put on our Pull-Ups which featured my son's favorite Disney character-Lightning McQueen. This helped to excite him about wearing his "big boy underwear" that he could slide on and off all by himself. They offer a few different characters to suit your child's personality. I believe this is key to staying motivated and consistent!

Our favorite tool lately has been the character video chats at Pull-Ups.com! Parents can get their child excited to start potty training and keep them engaged throughout by receiving a call from one of their favorite characters. Visit Pull-Ups.com to get a call from your child’s fave character!

He gets so excited when we let him call one of the characters when he needs a little encouragement along the way.
