Every Male Can Learn From What This Boy Did When a Girl Got Her First Period

Adolescence is rough — particularly so when you're a girl caught off-guard by your period to, from, or at school. It's bad enough to be uncomfortable physically, but everyone knows kids can be merciless at that age. Thankfully, every now and then, we hear a story on this subject that makes us cheer instead of cringe. And that's exactly what one mom reported to the closed Facebook group, Gurgaon Moms. A screenshot of the post made its way to Reddit, where it's going viral.

In the post, the anonymous mom shared that her daughter was on the bus when she got her period. An older boy "pulled her aside."

Instead of making a nasty remark or taunting her, he gave her a heads-up and his sweater to "tie around her waist so she could walk home off of the bus." When she shyly said "it's okay," he explained, "I have sisters, it's all good!" So heartening.

Commenters on Reddit agreed that the boy's kind act was applause-worthy.

One guy even shared a story of pulling a similarly chivalrous move when he was a kid.

On Facebook, the response was equally over-the-moon, with some women sharing similarly positive childhood experiences.

Others gave the boy props and mused on just how important it is to teach both boys and girls about one another's bodies.

Hooray for this boy — and for his parents, obviously. Also, it's no surprise that he reacted this way as a young man with sisters. Research published in the Journal of Family Psychology found that having a sister can help you become a kinder, more giving person. Researchers attributed that to the fact that sisters promote positive social behaviors, such as compassion and altruism, when they show love and affection.

But sisters or not, this boy's behavior is exactly what we should commend and expect from our boys. As this mom's story shows, a little compassion can go a long way.
