I'm willing to bet you didn't need another reason to love Target, but this week, the popular department store is giving you one anyway. In advance of the Halloween season (yes, we're already talking about Halloween), the retail giant is unveiling two new adaptive Halloween costumes for kids who use wheelchairs — and parents everywhere are cheering.
The new options include a pink princess-themed costume, complete with a wheelchair cover that will turn it into an enchanted carriage.
According to the product page, the dress itself is "thoughtfully designed" with an opening in the back, which makes getting dressed easier for giving kids who use wheelchairs. And the wheelchair covers offer an easy way to totally transform wheels into something that looks straight out of a fairy tale.
Of course, the costume also comes with a pretty tiara to complete the look.
But if the whole princess thing isn't really the vibe your kid is going for, there's always the pirate costume!
Now your little pirates can plunder gold to their heart's content. The outfit comes with a vest, eye patch, and — of course — a pirate's hat. But you'll also love its wheelchair-friendly design, which includes specially made pants with leg openings wide enough so you can put them on when your child's shoes are already on.
Both this costume and the princess one have an added bonus parents everywhere will appreciate: They're affordable. The pirate costume comes in at $25, and the princess costume costs just $20. The additional wheelchair coverings are each $45.
The new costumes join Target's previous collection of adaptive Halloween costumes, which launched last year.
The other ones include sensory-friendly unicorn and shark costumes, which come without tags or bunchy seams to bother tiny trick-or-treaters who may have sensory issues.
Needless to say, those have been a hit too.
At this point, Target is no stranger to creating cute and functional adaptive clothing -- or the mass appeal of such things.
"Based on the response to our Cat & Jack adaptive apparel and Pillowfort sensory-friendly home items, we know that design details can have a huge impact," Target spokesperson Kristen Mezzenga said in an interview with The Mighty this week.
And so, when thinking ahead to Halloween '19, the folks at Target considered it a no-brainer: Creating more inclusive Halloween costumes for kids just made sense.
In a statement to The Mighty, Mezzenga continued:
"Weâre now bringing that spirit of inclusivity to our new Hyde and Eek! Boutique kidsâ adaptive Halloween costumes, which we hope will bring more ease and joy to our guestsâ everyday lives. From a fun shark and unicorn to a princess and a pirate, these costumes feature thoughtful details like flat seams and no tags, helping even more kids enjoy the festivities of the fall season."
