My Son’s Friends Won’t Come To His Birthday Party Since We’re Vegan so I Invited Strangers

Have we figured out yet that every family is different and may not do things exactly the way that we do? That should be just fine. As long as their way of living works for their family and they are happy and healthy, can we just each other alone? A mom from Australia recently realized that adults — and kids — can be pretty cruel when they don’t subscribe to the same life choices.

Angel Craine is a 27-year-old mom of two boys who lives in Scarborough in southeast Queensland. She and her boys live a vegan lifestyle and are perfectly content with their dietary choices. But when Craine was planning a birthday party for her 5-year-old son, Malachi, she realized that the family’s veganism was not accepted by a lot of people. Now, the whole family is hurt.

Malachi wanted a Pokémon-themed party.

@couriermail Vegans will rally around a Moreton Bay region four-year-old whose birthday party invites received no RSVP’s from his school mates because there will be “no cow” in his cake. Angel Craine, 27, of Scarborough, posted in the Vegans in Australia Facebook group asking if anyone from Brisbane’s northside would like to come to her son Malachi’s fifth birthday party. “My four-year-old son seems to get bullied a lot for being vegan,” she wrote. “Apparently none of his friends want to come to his birthday if he has a vegan cake and are always being rude about him being a vegan all the time. I just can’t get over that kids his age already bully vegans.” Read the full story via the link in our bio. #vegan #veganlifestyle #plantbased #nocow #crueltyfree #veganmum #vegankids #veganparenting ♬ Pumpkin - Fred Paci & Nobel

He is a little boy and he wanted something fun to celebrate his big birthday. Craine told Daily Mail Australia she jumped right into planning the birthday bash and sent invitations to Malachi’s classmates. As Malachi started to talk about the party with his friends at school, Craine said the other children didn’t appear to share the same excitement.

His mom claims Malachi was talking about his cake, and that’s when things went sour.

Craine told Daily Mail that her little boy was so thrilled about the party and started to share details.

“I think he was excited to tell his friends he's having a chocolate vegan cake and they ran him down about it and said they won't come,” she said.

But then the kids allegedly said something strange. “They want him to have 'cow' in his cake or they aren't coming, that's how they worded it,” she explained.

She thought they would get over it, but as the RSVP deadline got closer and no friends said they were coming, she told Daily Mail she began to get nervous.

Craine didn’t want Malachi to be disappointed, so she reached out online.

She said she went to a vegan Facebook group and asked if anyone would be able to come. There are now about a dozen kids planning to attend the party, which Craine said she is happy about.

“It will be nice for him to make some kind friends with similar interests. He's always keen to make friends, he's a little social butterfly so he's super excited about his birthday,” she said.

The mom contends this was all Malachi’s idea.

Even though she has been a practicing vegan for some time, Craine never pushed the idea on Malachi or his younger brother. But an incident in January changed Malachi’s mind. He was enjoying one of his favorite foods, chicken nuggets, when he found out where they came from. Craine said that was the end for him, and he swore off chicken forever.

“He absolutely loves his animals. When I explained that chicken is what's in nuggets and cow in burgers he was instantly thrown off and never wanted to touch any animal product again.”

Malachi loves animals.

Craine told Daily Mail that Malachi and his brother are both animal lovers and like to visit farms to see them up close. Although his party may be a bit different than they originally planned, Malachi isn’t going to change who he is for anyone.

“He is really passionate about being vegan,” his mom said.
