Mom Says She’s Moving Her Family Out of State Just So She Can Save $30K on Her Kids’ Educations

Where you live may not be something you think about until you have kids, or are planning to. But then, your location might have a real bearing on how you choose to raise your family. Some people who have the means may even move to a different state. A mom on social media explained that she is leaving Florida and moving to Connecticut because of schooling.

The mom gave a list of reasons, but the biggest thing was her kids’ education. Making sure they have all the resources available is important to her, and the public school system in Florida is not up to her standards. So, she is making the move to give her kids the best education she can, without shelling out for private school.

The mom had a detailed list of reasons for moving.

Mom of three Ellie Doyle, a lifestyle influencer on TikTok, detailed her reasons for moving in a “get ready with me” video that has over 732,000 views.

At the beginning of the video, she explains that she has 1-year-old twins and a 5-year-old. One of the main reasons she and her husband decided to move to Connecticut is because it has one of the best public school systems in the country. “We cannot pay for private school for three children,” she says, clarifying that they “really, really don’t want to.”

“We will be saving at minimum $30,000 a year for putting our kids through the Connecticut public school system,” she claimed.

As a parent, she doesn’t feel confident in the education system in Florida.

“Before you come at me and you’re just like, ‘Well, why don’t you just put them in public schools in Florida?'” she began, anticipating what people might say. “I’m someone who grew up in Miami, Florida. I went to public school. They were great when I grew up, but times they are a-changing,” she explained.

She explained that “gifted” programs have been disappearing, and AP classes aren’t as available as they had previously been. Due to teacher shortages, core classes like English aren’t even being taught consistently in some schools.

“There’s not a ton of resources, not to mention all like the crazy banned book stuff,” she said. “It really is a very conservative area to be putting your kids through the public school system. It’s very religious-heavy, and that is just not where we side with.”

She feels confident in her choice.

She explained that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has played a big part in her decision as well. The mom said that the governor “has made things really difficult for public schools here, and it’s just something we wanna stray away from.”

Because of this, she knows that moving to Connecticut is the right choice for her family. “We’ve looked into the public school system in Connecticut, and it is fan-freaking-tastic. I’m very excited for my kids to go to school there and have a great public school experience,” she said.

People were on her side about leaving Florida.

“We moved from Tampa to north central Connecticut and I cannot tell you how many times I’ve cried because my autistic son’s elementary school has been an absolute dream to work with!!” one mom wrote.

“We moved from FL to CT in June,” another parent wrote. “Yes the taxes stink, but as far as it being more expensive I haven’t really seen that. My daughter is THRIVING in school where in FL she was failing and so fearful.”

“I live in Orlando now with my husband and three year old,” another mom commented. “We’re researching places to move before she starts school. Fl schools are terrible.”

The mom knows her choice is hers alone, but it’s something to think about.

Ellie spoke with BuzzFeed about her video, telling the site that another issue she has is the Florida school voucher system. She claims that vouchers often “benefits schools that are highly conservative.” Which isn’t something her family wants to align with.

And another big reason for leaving the Florida school system is what teachers aren’t allowed to teach. “Teachers aren’t allowed to teach social-emotional learning in Florida. They don’t want teachers to teach empathy or inclusion… And don’t even get me started on the book-banning frenzy here,” she said.

“I don’t mind paying more taxes in Connecticut if it means my kids are getting a fantastic public education filled with field trips, experiments, extracurriculars, gifted programs, and fully stocked libraries,” she said.
