Mom on TikTok Faces Criticism After Announcing She’ll Keep Dog Who Mauled Toddler’s Face

A mom on TikTok went viral for sharing how her dog attacked her daughter several years ago. She then received backlash after sharing that her and her husband decided not to put the dog down or rehome it. Several years later, the scars left on her daughter's face have not healed properly and the mother is asking for donations to help with scar resurfacing.

The video went viral and has now been viewed nearly 297,000 times, and has received over 6,000 likes, more than 1,000 comments, and has been shared over 1,000 times.

The family dog made a 'mistake.'

The mother of the girl who was attacked goes by @klara_tsetkin on TikTok, but previously went under the username @mia.dream.usa. The beginning of the video is captioned with, “they’ve been the best of friends since she was born," and shows loving footage of her daughter and their family dog snuggling on a bed.

The video transitions into a photo of her daughter with stitches on her face, and a shirt that appears to have blood on it with the caption, “then something went wrong." The video then shows a photo of the dog captioned, “he made a mistake,” followed by a photo of her daughter at home with stitches, then a photo of the dog again captioned, “after that everybody told me to kill my dog."

Her daughter’s scars didn’t heal properly.

A GoFundMe page appears to have been created by the girl’s mother, explaining the incident and sharing information about a surgery to help with the scars.

“In emergency room the doctor did not sew up her face tightly due to a possible infection, and therefore my daughter has a fairly noticeable scar on her left cheek,” the fundraiser description reads. "Now she is 5,5 years old and we are decided to do a scar resurfacing..it's done by a few of these and plastic surgery is not covered by insurance. So we need some help to remove her possible complexes in the future and keep her beautiful, girlish face."

Small children are more likely to be attacked by dogs.

Unfortunately, the incident with the family’s dog and the little girl is one of many. According to WebMd, dogs that bite once are more likely to attack again with the second attack being worse than the first.

The study WebMD cited also found that there is a 50% chance a child will get bitten by a dog in their lifetime and 80% of those injuries are to the head and neck area.

TikTok users are torn on who to blame for the incident

TikTok users are torn on who should carry the blame for the incident: the family’s dog or the mother of the child who was attacked, who still insists on keeping the dog.

“It’s unfortunate this happened but I don’t think I’d trust my dog again if he did this to my child … I say rehome him to someone without children," one user commented.

Other users were not as kind with the comments they left.

“The dog isn’t the one that made the mistake, but it’ll be the one to pay the price,” one person commented.

“There were clear signs that he wasn’t into being loved on, it wasn’t a mistake, it was a warning/back off bite because he was uncomfortable,” another commented.

Some users offered sympathy for the situation the mother had to deal with.

“I am so sorry this happens to your daughter and all the judgmental comments are just awful," one comment reads. "Things happen and when they do you already feel bad enough.”
