A pregnant woman turned to internet users for advice after she walked out of her own baby shower over comments her mother-in-law made about her weight gain. She explained the upsetting situation on Reddit, with many backing her decision to leave the event.
The Origial Poster explained that she has always been a big girl but never shamed herself into thinking she was less of a woman. "I love myself just the way I am and I have been living by the motto "be you, everybody else's taken," she wrote at the beginning of the post.
Her mother-in-law's comments about her size, however, made the soon-to-be mom wonder if she was overreacting about the ordeal.
The woman's mother-in-law had previously made comments about her weight.
The OP told Redditors that her mother-in-law had a history of criticizing her weight. She "always made comments about my weight, ever since I got pregnant, she started making more comments while low-key shaming me for what I eat," she wrote.
"Whenever I visit, she'd give me a smaller plate, portion, cup even spoons. She also buys me 'small size' clothes even though I'm in my 2nd trimester and those clothes don't fit," she added.
The OP also mentioned that her sister had initially offered to throw her a baby shower, but she was barred from planning the party because her sister and husband reportedly had a fight. Instead, his sister made arrangements for the event. Although her in-laws were at the baby shower, her family decided not to attend.
The MIL was in charge of refreshments at the baby shower.
When the OP arrived, she learned her mother-in-law was in charge of serving guests "cake and juice."
She described what happened after taking a slice of cake. The woman "grabbed my arm and said that I'd gained enough weight already and that if 'I keep this' up her son will not be happy living with "a large Walrus."
The expecting mom couldn't believe her MIL made those statements in front of other people.
"I was shocked," the OP recalled in the post. She said she didn't know how to react because her husband's mother said it in a "sorry-not-sorry" matter.
"I put the cake down and grabbed my stuff and started walking. Her daughter stopped me, saying I can't leave mid-party and embarrass her like that," she wrote.
The expecting mom gave her SIL an ultimatum about her mother's remarks.
"I told her to tell her mom to leave if she wanted me to stay but she went off and said 'Are you crazy? She's my mom! you want me to kick her out in front of everybody?'" the SIL said to OP. "I turned around and kept walking. I called my mom to come to pick me up and went home."
In the post, the OP shared her husband was "furious" about what happened at the baby shower. When she explained that his mom made comments about her weight, he suggested that she was overreacting about a minor situation. The OP replied that "it wasn't minor in my opinion since she [literally] cut me off food and didn't let me eat when I was hungry."
The OP went to stay with her mother after her husband pressured her to call and apologize to his mother, which she refused to do.
Reddit users suggested her husband was trying to control her.
People in the comment section shared their thoughts on the situation while suggesting that the OP's husband was trying to ruin her relationship with her family. The "husband is AWFUL. He’s definitely trying to isolate her and their baby from her family," one person wrote.
"Husband is using flimsy excuses (like sister bringing gifts) to isolate OP from her family, and then leaves OP to be bullied and harassed by his family of origin," another commenter shared.
"How does he get to decide such things? And how is calling her a walrus construed as 'she meant well'? It's not a good situation," wrote someone else.
The commenters also agreed with the OP's decision to leave the baby shower while encouraging her to be careful of her husband's controlling behavior.
