Mom on TikTok Livid After School Puts Duct Tape on Her Daughter for Violating Dress Code

School dress codes rarely allow room for current fashion trends. In the early aughts, when spaghetti straps were all the rage, they were strictly forbidden from my middle school. So much so that all straps were measured by a three-finger test.Today, you’d be hard-pressed to find jeans that don’t have any holes or rips anywhere in stores. Yet, for one school, this type of denim violates its standards.

The mother of a teen daughter shared that although she doesn’t have a problem with the school’s dress code, she is "livid" about the way it was addressed. She shared all the details on TikTok.

'Did you think it was acceptable to put duct tape on my daughter’s skin?' this mom asked.

In a video that has been viewed nearly 4 million times, we watch as a mother, who goes by the name @shanahdrummond2 on TikTok, walks into her daughter’s school. In the video, which partially obscures the name of the school, she walks up to someone at a desk and asks, “Did you think it was acceptable to put duct tape on my daughter’s skin?”

The person whose face is not shown says the teen was told to go to the nurse’s office, according to the New York Post.

The mom says someone at the school should have contacted her.

@shanahdrummond2 Am I overreacting, or am I justified in being pissed off that the school thought it was acceptable to put duct tape on my childs skin? I feel the school should've called me if they needed her to change her pants. We have never had an issue with a dress code before. The cheerleader uniforms are shorter than this. She was humiliated and had to hide it by tying her coat around the front of her. My daughter has eczema & sensitive skin and if she didn't text us, she would've sat all day with duct tape irritating her legs. #dresscode #policy #TheRealPussinBoots #school #madmomma ♬ original sound - shanahdrummond2

Not satisfied with that as an answer to her initial question, the mom asks again, “Is the policy to put duct tape on a child’s skin?

In the caption for the video, the mother wrote, “I feel the school should've called me if they needed her to change her pants. We have never had an issue with a dress code before. The cheerleader uniforms are shorter than this. She was humiliated and had to hide it by tying her coat around the front of her. My daughter has eczema & sensitive skin and if she didn't text us, she would've sat all day with duct tape irritating her legs.”

She shared that the school dress code has no mention of duct tape as punishment.

Later, the mom posted a copy of the school’s dress code, noting that it never mentions duct tape as a potential punishment. “I would've never signed to agree with something like that,” she wrote in the caption.

Although some commenters argued that this mother’s daughter should have complied with the dress code, others were able to see it was the duct tape that was the real issue.

“All of us with adhesive allergies are horrified,” one user wrote.

In another post, the mom shared that her daughter’s school is typically good about communicating with her. When her daughter was absent, the school sent a text asking about her whereabouts.

The mom says people online have taken it too far in insinuating that her daughter is a 'bad kid'.

In another video, responding to all of the notifications, the mom says the school’s consequences for violating dress code are listed in the handbook and duct tape is not one of them. She reiterates that her daughter suffers from skin conditions and allergies and that duct tape is not safe for her skin.

She continues, explaining that her daughter has been wearing those same jeans to school for two years and it hasn’t been an issue. She also addressed the critics online, saying, “You guys have taken it too far saying she’s a bad kid and I’m a s—-y parent because of it. No.”
