Mom Arrested & Charged With Felony Child Abuse After Baby Overdoses Twice in One Month

An Indiana mother was arrested October 16 after a months-long investigation into two separate cases of juvenile drug overdoses at her Indianapolis home. Jasmine Clark, 27, allegedly left drugs accessible to her children in her downtown apartment. Police visited the location twice during the summer and reportedly administered Narcan to Clark’s daughter, Ca'Marii, who was 11 months old at the time of the first incident and 12 months old at the time of the second.

The mother of three reportedly told police she kept marijuana in the apartment, but when her daughter overdosed the second time, police allegedly found multiple narcotics in the home, believed to have contributed to the baby’s overdoses.

The first call reportedly came in July 25.

The investigation began in late July, Fox 59 reported, when officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reportedly responded to a call at Clark’s apartment about an unresponsive child.

Ca'Marii was revived with Narcan, which is used to reduce the effects of opioid overdose. Clark allegedly told police she was at the grocery store and left the baby’s father, 29-year-old Cartez Morris, in charge, per court records obtained by the news station.

Clark allegedly told police she noticed something was wrong when she returned home from the store.

Clark told police Ca'Marii was face down on a pillow when she returned. She put her under cold water, which helped to revive her, but called police for help. Morris allegedly administered CPR while the couple waited for emergency responders to arrive.

She told police she kept marijuana in a white nightstand but that she and Morris were the only ones who had access to it. There were reportedly no arrests made in July.

When police were called back to the home in August, they found the baby unresponsive a second time.

Clark reportedly told police August 21 that she noticed Ca'Marii was displaying similar symptoms to the first overdose. Police again administered Narcan and interviewed Clark. She said she was the only adult in the home at the time.

Detectives searched the apartment and allegedly found multiple drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Investigators reportedly found a silver tray with a pair of scissors and what appeared to be a white residue. Detectives allegedly also found a screwdriver in a drawer that contained a brown residue, according to Fox 59.

When the baby was drug tested at the hospital, she reportedly tested positive for fentanyl and cannabinoids. Clark also tested positive for fentanyl and THC. All three of Clark's children were removed from the home.

Clark is in Marion County Jail.

According to jail records, she is in jail without bond, facing two level three felony counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. Her next court date is scheduled for December 19.

Police are still looking for Morris with an active arrest warrant. He also faces charges in the case.
