Making the decision to have a baby is a very personal one. Of course, people may make their opinions heard or try to influence a person’s decision, but it can be complicated. However, a person should never have the decision made for them. Shockingly, a woman in Illinois was reportedly given abortion pills without her consent. This resulted in a miscarriage, and now her boyfriend, Emerson Evans, is facing serious charges because he is allegedly the one who gave her the pills.
Police in Bloomington responded to a call about a pregnant woman having a medical emergency on August 22, 2025, they shared in a news release. They were aided by the Bloomington Fire Department. The woman, who has not been identified, was having a miscarriage.
According to police, a large amount of blood was in the bathroom, 25 News Now reported. The fetus was allegedly found in the toilet. Court documents stated that Evans said he paid $50 for the pills to a “girl on campus.”
Upon investigating the miscarriage, police found that the woman was given the abortion pill mifepristone without her consent. She was about seven weeks pregnant, IPM News reported. Her boyfriend, 31-year-old Emerson Evans, was the one who gave her the pills, the woman told police. He told her he wanted her to end the pregnancy.
Evans allegedly told police that he “made the decision for her.” On August 25, he appeared in court after being arrested. He allegedly inserted four of the pills into his girlfriend vaginally; the recommended dose is one pill taken orally.
“Frankly, the number of pills demonstrates lack of knowledge or consent,” Judge Amy McFarland said in court, per IPM News. She also used Evans’ words against him, saying he did what he did to “effectuate his beliefs of what should occur in the absence of consent. That involved taking a life.”
The judge used this reasoning, paired with the woman reportedly saying she was afraid of Evans, to keep him in jail.
Emerson Evans has been charged with two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child. He will return to court in September.
“We are again saddened by the alleged criminal actions which resulted in harm to others. It is my hope the mother involved in the matter fully recovers and has the resources and support of this strong community in the future,” Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington shared in the news release. “The officers and detectives worked diligently and honorably through this very tough investigation.”
Authorities won’t be releasing any additional details about the case out of “respect for the privacy of the victim,” they noted in the release. Meanwhile, the investigation continues.
