I’m not calling out anyone specifically, but what is it with dads and their inability to capture the moment for us with our kids when we need them to? Alina, a mom on TikTok, shared a video in which her husband joins the ranks of millions of other husbands and fathers who just miss the mark. And other moms in the comments called him out, along with other dads out there, for failing to do this one important job.
In the video, Alina has her two young children with her and her husband behind the phone, presumably taking a photo or a video. But in pointing out the garbage can behind her, he misses the moment and it passes. We’ve all seen photo evidence of this in the past.
Dads or husbands are tasked with capturing moments for us because we are, more often than not, the ones taking photos and capturing memories for everyone else. But they take unflattering photos or off-center videos without really trying. It’s an epidemic, really.
The dad doesn’t seem to try hard to capture the moment for his wife and kids.

The video is less than 20 seconds long, but it’s a snapshot into the reality of what some husbands and fathers do, or don’t do, when it comes to taking pictures and capturing memories. At some point, the bare minimum just doesn’t cut it. That doesn’t mean Alina’s husband is delivering the bare minimum as a dad and husband. However, in this instance, he could have stepped his game way up.
As the sun sets in the background, Alina kneels in the driveway with her toddlers. From behind the camera, her husband laughs about there being “trash cans in the background.” And then, just like that, the moment is shattered, and the kids are no longer in one place with Alina. The opportunity to capture a spur of the moment memory with her kids is gone.
She laughs and tells her husband he could have moved because he is not a “goal post.” But, as a mom and wife, I can see the frustration behind her eyes and laugh. It’s an annoyance and disappointment that he couldn’t just get this one memory on film for her. And other moms and wives in the comments under her TikTok video were quick to call out men in general who, time and again, fail in this department. Is it in their DNA? At this point, I’ve stopped trying to understand.

Another woman wrote, “I feel this on a visceral level.”
“Ugh man so annoying we have to tell them how to do literally everything,” someone else commented, in a clear show of support for Alina’s struggle with her husband. Which, again, is something that so many of us face, especially as the picture takers and memory makers of the family.
Another user commented with a suggestion, and although it’s clearly a joke, they might be on to something.
“Before a man proposes he should have to take basic photography classes like that’s his dowry along with the ring bc we’re all suffering,” they wrote.
Another wife wrote that her husband’s one job in capturing photos of their daughter’s performance recital resulted in the backs of other audience members’ heads. I would love to say color me shocked, but, uh, yeah, not anymore.
