What to Know
During the holiday season, many of us get to enjoy spending time with our families and loved ones that might not be possible during the rest of the year… but is that always a good thing? Not according to Mad Men star January Jones, who has a major bone to pick with her brother-in-law.
Earlier this month, she took to Instagram to call him out for “deliberately triggering” her health condition. What did he do? Well, it started with his choice to eat chips.
January opened up about her battle with misophonia.
In the video, January started out by sharing her diagnosis with her followers.
“For today, I’d like to talk about something that I’ve been struggling with my whole life, which is called misophonia, and it’s gotten progressively worse over the years,” she said.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, misophonia is a “disorder where you have a decreased tolerance to specific sounds and things you can sense related to them.” There are certain sounds that are more triggering to those the disorder than others, including the sounds of someone breathing heavily or chewing.
Her brother-in-law has, unfortunately, committed a major sin against her time and time again.
And this is where January has a problem: Her brother-in-law, actor Tyler King (who is married to her sister, Jina) really loves chips, and she said he does not take a break from his snacking when he’s around her, despite knowing about her misophonia.
“I have talked to him about this many times, and he seems to think it’s funny to eat chips around me now because it’s an ongoing joke to see what happens and see what I do,” she said. “I just think it’s really unkind to my issue and also very dangerous… for him.”
January continued, “So, what I didn’t do today was record this video inside a prison. Because I’ve imagined many ways to do it, too. But I haven’t. I didn’t. Not yet.”
She ended the video by wishing him a happy birthday, since it happened to be his birthday that day. What a way to mark the occasion!
He did try to defend himself with a post of his own, though.
As People reported, Tyler ended up sharing January’s video on his own Instagram Stories (though his post has since expired), trying to offer up his side of the story.
“To be fair, I do try to crunch quietly. But every now and then, yes, I do think it’s funny… thanks for the birthday (threat?) wish!” he wrote.
If nothing else, this shows that they definitely have a brother/sister bond going. But maybe Tyler really should think about finding a quieter snack…
