An Ohio family welcomed a new baby boy in early December, but before he even turned 2 weeks old, tragedy struck inside their Preble County Home. As the 12-day-old infant lay inside his bassinet, the family’s dog reportedly knocked it over. When the baby fell, the dog bit him. Family called 911, and emergency responders arrived at the home in the 4000 block of Camden-West Elkton Road and used life-saving measures on the newborn, but he died of his injuries. This is the kind of heartache no one involved will ever forget.
Police and EMS came to the home around 9 a.m. on December 18, 2025, following a terrifying 911 call, WKEF reported. “My emergency is my baby tipped over and bashed his head in,” the caller said.
The dispatcher helped the caller perform CPR while they waited for help. Sadly, authorities declared the child dead at the home a short time later.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to this family for what they’re having to go through now and just can’t even imagine having to go through that,” Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson told WHIO.
Preliminary autopsy results found the dog knocked the bassinet over and bit the child several times. Authorities did not release the family’s name or the type of dog in the home but described it as being a medium or large breed.
“We have it quarantined because of the dog bite thing,” Simpson said. “We will keep it quarantined and then will work with [the family] and see what their decisions are going to be.”
Many people shared their thoughts about the tragic death in WHIO’s comment section on Facebook.
“I can’t even begin to imagine how the family is feeling right now,” someone shared. “Praying so hard for them.”
Some didn’t understand how this could have happened.
“This is my take. 12 day old baby in a bassinet with a dog. The baby new to the dog and the parents where ever they were could not hear this noise possibly from the baby or the dog,” one person commented. “This just doesn’t add up. Also this so called cut and dry case still under investigation? Why? I do feel sorry about the tragedy.”
Others asked for compassion for a family whose baby is gone and whose hearts are broken.
“This is a small Community and no one should be judging the family if anything ever one should came together and support this family I would Think they are going through enough So if you don’t know want is going on do you not voice your opinion on here?” another person wrote. “if anything support them, and pray for them God bless this family and the community for all their support.”
The infant’s death remains under investigation. May their family find peace and strength with each other during their unbelievably difficult time.
