What to Know
There have been plenty of rumors over the years that Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla don’t exactly see eye to eye, and the latest certainly isn’t going to help the situation any.
After Kate chose to wear a rather large tiara to a state banquet earlier this month, a royal insider has claimed that her choice in accessories has sparked a fresh round of tension between the two. Apparently, Camilla doesn’t like that Kate tried to steal her spotlight with such a big headpiece — and that’s not the only reason that the two royal women have butted heads recently.
Kate wore the Oriental Circlet Tiara earlier this month.
The Princess of Wales really pulled out all the stops when the time came to welcome German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier to the UK. As per tradition for these state visits, the royals threw a banquet in his honor at Windsor Castle, and since this was an evening event, royal ladies were able to wear a tiara to dinner.
For Kate, that meant sporting the Oriental Circlet Tiara, which is made with 2,600 rubies and diamonds. While she was wearing this thing, anyone could spot Kate from a mile away.
Camilla wasn’t very impressed.
Despite the fact that Kate looked fabulous in the sparkly crown, a source told Radar Online that Camilla wasn’t too pleased with Kate’s choice in tiaras, particularly when it came to the size.
“Camilla was reportedly furious that Kate wore the enormous tiara at the banquet. She viewed it as yet another obvious move by Kate to steal the spotlight,” the source said. “Kate has been taking on more responsibilities across royal duties, and while she handles it gracefully in public, Camilla is privately finding the change in influence and authority difficult to accept.”
She’s not a big fan of Kate and William’s approach to preparing to take over the monarchy in the future, either.
So far, Camilla reportedly sees William’s ideal way of ruling the monarchy as “brutal,” with the source saying that it “put the chills up Camilla” to see how he’s reacted recently, especially when it comes to the way the former Prince Andrew scandal was handled.
“Camilla can see from how Kate and William have managed Andrew, Sarah, and the Sussexes that they are highly strategic,” the insider added. “She’s been cautioned against provoking them.”
