What to Know
Kim Kardashian has always made it clear that she’s here to let her oldest daughter, North West, express herself, and recently, it sounds like she’s gone above and beyond to make sure that can happen. When Kim appeared on sister Khloé Kardashian’s podcast this week, she opened up about her decision to homeschool North, making sure that her classes apply to her 12-year-old daughter’s passions, even if that means they are a bit unconventional.
Despite how things may appear, Kim said she actually does have a lot of rules for North.
Though Kim has gotten a lot of flack over the years for how North expresses herself through fashion and her appearance, she said on Khloé in Wonder Land that she tries not to pay too much attention to the chatter.
“Northie actually has a lot of rules,” Kim said. “The one area is that I do let her express herself. I do let her do that.”
She added, “She really is who she is and always has been that girl, and so, I nurture her.”
Lately, she’s been “nurturing” her daughter through homeschooling.
Kim told Khloé that she tries to tie North’s subject areas to “realistic courses” that will actually interest her while she’s learning (and yes, she has a teacher helping her along who isn’t Kim).
“Math. We’ll give budgets and we’ll go around we’ll get stuff and we’ll add it all up and subtract it all,” she said. “She has a brand-building class, it’s an actual course and a curriculum, fully interactive learning.”
She continued, “We do full fashion courses. She goes, in the summers to, to FIT in New York and goes to fashion camp. [She] loves these more interactive experiences, and so, I nurture her. It’s a full-time job even for me and her teacher. I think people don’t realize that I’m with her and the kids 24/7.”
Kim even took six months off of work to get North settled into her homeschool routine.
“I took the last six months off to be able to really do her courses and get the curriculum from her teachers and be there in the room with her,” Kim said. “It’s been a lot, and it’s been so fun to see her blossom.”
She also explained how she makes sure that North’s education doesn’t end with the school day, adding, “She’d do a regular music course and learn certain things. But at home, she’ll do an eight-hour music studio session where she’s producing and writing.”
Kim said that if people really knew North, “they would be proud to see how smart she really is, and how creative she really is. I can only dream that my children all find a passion and purpose as young as she has.”
This is definitely not realistic for all (okay, most) families, but it does sound like she’s found the right routine for her creative daughter… even if Kim does get plenty of flak for North’s piercings.
