Many argue that Valentine’s Day is a commercial, made-up holiday, but others enjoy celebrating February 14 with the one they love most. No matter how you personally feel about the day, it’s synonymous with love and romance. But this year, Valentine’s Day turned into a nightmare for a 31-year-old Indiana mom of three, Alicia Hughes. Her husband apparently caught her in bed with another man. This wasn’t just any man, however; it was an 18-year-old student from the school where she works as a secretary.
Hughes called the police, accusing her husband of a physical attack after he found her in bed with the teenager. Hughes apparently had a thing for younger men, and the Valentine’s Day lover wasn’t her only victim.
According to a news release from the Union City Police Department, officers responded to a call about an alleged battery. When police arrived, Hughes claimed her husband battered her. But as police continued to investigate, that’s when they realized Hughes allegedly slept with a teenager. She worked as a secretary at Randolph Eastern School Corporation, where the student attended.
“As the investigation progressed, Union City Police Department investigators uncovered evidence that Alicia Hughes had also engaged in a sexual relationship with a separate high school student who was 17 years old at the time,” police shared in the news release on social media. “Investigators determined that Hughes and the minor engaged in sexual intercourse on at least five occasions.”
In police interview footage obtained by Law & Crime, Hughes admitted she had slept with the teen they found her in bed with before but “not before he was 18.” The investigator also asked if she had slept with any other minor, which she denied. When police pressed her, she asked for a lawyer.
According to the New York Post, a 17-year-old came forward hours before her arrest and claimed to have had a sexual affair with the school employee. Hughes now faces five counts of child sexual seduction.
Randolph Eastern School Corporation shared a statement on Facebook following Hughes’ arrest.
“The employee has been removed from all duties with students pending the outcome of the legal process. Student safety and well-being remain our highest priority. RESC takes all allegations involving students extremely seriously. Upon becoming aware of concerns, the corporation fully cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so as the investigation proceeds. We appreciate the professionalism and diligence of local authorities in handling this matter,” the statement reads in part.
At what point are these kinds of illicit relationships going to stop? Sure, her one alleged victim may have been 18, but if Hughes works at the school he attends, that should be a hard stop. People need to start using their brains, not their hormones, to make decisions.
