What to Know
When Melania Trump appeared at a United Nations Security Council meeting amid the war in Iran, she spoke about children caught in the middle of wars happening in the Middle East. After her would-be speech was posted on X (formerly Twitter), a lot of users walked away with questions about her accent and grapes on the English language rather than the content of what she said.
For those who oppose Donald Trump, his views, and his plans for world domination, can you really blame them? Just kidding on that last one, but, Trump’s critics can teach a master class on trolling Trump and those close to him, and that includes Melania. The X post with a video from her UN appearance noted, “How her English is getting worse instead of better.”

Melania is originally from Slovenia. According to the White House, Melania moved to the United States some time in the 90’s. That means, at the time of the 2026 UN meeting, Melania had been in the U.S. for more than 20 years. Yet, according to many, her accent is as thick as ever and it can be hard to understand certain words, even when she speaks slowly. Which she does tend to do often.
“The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world,” Melania said at the meeting. “I hope soon peace will be yours.” She did not specifically call out children in Iran or even in the Middle East, but that was the takeaway. Other than, of course, her very thick accent when speaking English words from the docket in front of her.
Melania added, per the video, “We must capture this positive energy and ignite it across continents to transform our world.” How much of that did everyone understand? According to Melania’s harshest critics, not much.
People have a lot to say about Melania Trump’s English.
Melania already had a strike against her for being a president’s spouse at the UN meeting and not the actual president, which is more customary than a sitting president sending a first lady to such an event. In response to the X post about Melania’s accent and her command of the English language, people quickly called her out.
“Other people would have rehearsed and prepared before giving a speech at the United Nations,” one user commented. Another wrote, “She’s also literally reading this from a piece of paper.”
Someone called out Melania for the amount of time she has been in the U.S. around native English speakers. They wrote, “How long has she lived in America now? About 20 years?
You can hardly make out what she’s saying. Most people pick up the language way faster after two years of living in a new country. Quite apart from her being immensely under-qualified to chair such a committee.”
