The Rocha family went to sleep on March 21, 2026, just like every other night in their Stephenville, Texas, home. No one expected their lives to be ripped apart just a few hours later. In the middle of the night, a car crashed into the family’s home, killing 49-year-old Barbara Rocha and her son, Alex. Now, instead of preparing to enjoy the spring months ahead, the family has to plan two funerals. The 18-year-old driver, Gracie Yates, faces homicide charges and a shockingly short prison term.
The crash occurred around 3:30 a.m.
Fox 4 reported that police responded to a call about a vehicle crashing into a home just before 3:30 a.m. When police and EMS personnel arrived, they tried life-saving measures on both Barbara and Alex Rocha. Sadly, they could not save them.
The sound of the crash woke neighbor Reese Skinner, who told WFAA it shocked him. “It hit hard. You always think that crazy things will never happen to you or hit this close to home,” he shared.
The crash left the Rocha family numb.
Skinner said he spoke to Alfredo Rocha, who lost not only his son but also his beloved wife of 31 years.
“He told me what had happened, but I just felt helpless. I wanted to help him, and all I could do is offer my condolences and a hug and just wish that there was a little more,” Skinner said, per WFAA.
Raul Rocha, one of Barbara and Alfredo Rocha’s older sons, told Fox 4 that getting the call about the crash felt like a nightmare. Another brother called him with the news.
“He said: ‘All I remember is I heard a crash. I went in the room and all you could hear was my little brother screaming and my mom praying,'” Raul Rocha shared. “And that’s what I have stuck in the back of my head right now my little brother screaming, and my mom praying.”
A friend has launched a GoFundMe page for Alfredo Rocha, who not only lost his beloved wife and son but also his home. It’s raised more than $60,000 thus far.
“In an instant, Alfredo lost his family and the place he called home. The shock and pain of this loss are unimaginable, and now he’s left to pick up the pieces of his life while grieving for those he loved most,” the friend wrote in a heartfelt message. “Alfredo and his family are good people who did not deserve to have this tragedy happen to them because of a drunk driver. His life will never be the same.”
Raul Rocha cannot believe his mom and brother died in such a horrific way.
“I never imagined this to happen to me. I never imagined losing my mom. My mom does not deserve this,” he told Fox 4. “She was so sweet. She always cared about us. She cared about anybody around her.”
He also had sweet words about his baby brother, Alex. “And then, my brother… I won’t be able to see him grow up,” he continued. “The thing I’m going to miss, whenever I go visit, he comes up and hugs me and says, ‘I missed you.’ I’m never going to get that again.”
Police arrested Yates, who faces charges.
Multiple outlets, including Fox 4 and WFAA, reported that police have arrested Yates. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The 18-year-old faces two counts of criminally negligent homicide. According to Texas law, she could receive up to two years in prison for each count.
We don’t know about you, but that seems like an awfully weak punishment for taking the lives of two people sleeping comfortably and safely in their own home. It certainly doesn’t feel like justice for the Rocha family.
