When it comes to caring for a baby, it’s impossible to consider all the potential scenarios that could cause danger or harm. As parents, we do our best to babyproof our homes and always keep our children safe. A mom in Argentina recently experienced the devastating loss of her young son in an unimaginable accident during a typical baby routine. Manicurist Aylin Saucedo was changing her son Dante’s diaper when she noticed he was choking. Somehow, Dante got a piece of an acrylic fingernail lodged in his throat. What happened next is truly heartbreaking.
Saucedo tried to remove the piece of acrylic nail.
Todos Noticias reported that as soon as Saucedo saw Dante choking, she tried to remove the piece of acrylic nail from his mouth.
“We were at home, and I realized he wasn’t breathing,” she told the news outlet. “I ran outside to ask my neighbor for help, but she couldn’t. Then my aunt came upstairs, and she couldn’t either. So, I rushed to the hospital.”
The mother rushed to the hospital 10 minutes away.
Per Todos Noticias, Saucedo took Dante to Grand Bourg Trauma Hospital, where staff desperately tried to save his life, but sadly, the baby boy died.
Per an autopsy report obtained by the news outlet, doctors confirmed Dante died from airway obstruction but did not find any evidence of violence. His death remains under investigation.
Dante’s father reportedly blames the mother for the boy’s death.
Saucedo told Todos Noticias that Dante’s unidentified father held her responsible for their baby’s death and tried to keep her away from his funeral.
“They wouldn’t give me any information,” she alleged, per the outlet. “They wouldn’t tell me when the wake was being held or where he was being buried. The father paid the funeral home to keep me from participating. He didn’t want me to get any information.”
In the end, she saw Dante and said her final goodbye. “I was able to see my son for 45 minutes because it was his father’s order,” she shared, according to Todos Noticias. “He held the wake and buried him afterward.”
The grieving mother posted about her son on social media.
According to Daily Mail, Saucedo shared her heartache in a social media post. “Today you’re no longer here, and all I have left are your toys, your little moles, and all your things without you. Mum is shattered into a thousand pieces and doesn’t even have the strength to face this pain,” she wrote. “I need you with me, I miss you, I need to wake up with you, and it breaks my heart to know we won’t have a morning having breakfast together, my love.”
Nothing can prepare a parent for this kind of heartbreak. No matter how hard we try to keep our babies safe, sometimes they put things in their mouths before we even realize it, and tragedy strikes. Her pain is surely punishment enough. We hope Dante’s father can show a bit of grace and see how he’d feel if he’d been the one with the baby at the time.
