There are so many beautiful relationships between dogs and children. My parents often tell the story of how their dog, Sandy, protectively slept under my crib and growled at anyone who approached at my childhood home in Philadelphia. Even when I arrived, she allegedly hopped up on her hind legs and hovered her paws just over the bassinet and peeked in, “determined not to wake” me up. So many people have similar tales. But sadly, many others have a different story to tell.
In the United States, approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur each year, with 1 out of 5 bites becoming infected. In the UK, there were 31,920 dog attacks recorded by the police in 2023, compared to 19,767 in 2018. An injured mom and her deceased 3-month-old girl are among those harrowing statistics, per People.
An unidentified 31-year-old woman received an arm injury that brought her to the hospital.
Tragically, her baby girl died in the home after the incident on April 9, 2026, according to a statement submitted by Cleveland Police in England. Shortly after arriving, “armed officers destroyed a dog on the street. Another dog located at the property was recovered by police. It has since been destroyed,” police shared. Following an assessment, authorities determined the dogs involved were none of the breeds officially prohibited in the country which includes the XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and the Japanese Tosa.
Police took a man into custody under ‘suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death.’
After questioning, however, the man was released on conditional bail. Police still consider the investigation active.
“Our thoughts continue to be with the child’s family following this tragic and distressing incident,” Cleveland Police Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale shared in the police statement. “I want to take this opportunity to request that their privacy is respected during this difficult time.”
“There will continue to be a scene in place at the property alongside a visible policing presence as the investigation is ongoing,” she added in the statement. “I encourage anyone who has concerns to please speak to an officer. We are also appealing to anyone with information, mobile or doorbell and dash cam footage to get in touch.”
Community members and neighbors are quite shaken up.
Videos show that people left toys, cards, and flowers in memory of the young girl.
An anonymous neighbor told Teesside Live that the incident has “shook everyone up. I went to bed in tears last night and took the kids to bed with me. It’s devastating.”
“I closed the blinds as I was looking after my great-granddaughter. I didn’t want her seeing any of that,” another anonymous resident shared with the outlet. “That poor baby, she had no life. It’s absolutely horrendous.”
Bystander Scarlett Calvert told Teeside Live that police cautioned residents to get inside. She claims authorities rounded up the dogs before she heard a gunshot. The police “had already captured one of the dogs and put it in the van but then the other dog got out through a gap in the fence,” she claimed.
