Reign
North & South
This four-part BBC One miniseries is based on an 1855 Victorian novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell. The plot centers around Margaret Hale, played by Daniela Denby-Ashe, who moves to the north of England after her father decides to give up being a member of the clergy. She develops feelings for the local factory owner John Thornton, played by Richard Armitage, but his wealthy family disapproves of her. Watch this on Tubi or Peacock to see if class differences or true love win out in the end.
The Tudors
Before Queen Charlotte and King George III ruled England, King Henry VIII sat on the throne. This Showtime series tells his story and how he managed to have six wives and change the religious nature of his country forever. You can stream it on Paramount+. The show begins with his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and ends with his death. His final wife, Catherine Parr, would outlive him. She died after giving birth to her only child, Mary Seymour. Lady Jane Grey was a close friend.
Victoria
Queen Victoria sat on the British throne from June 20, 1837, to January, 22 1901. She was the second-longest-reigning monarch. Her great great granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, beat her. This PBS series tells the story of her reign including her love story with Prince Albert, played by Tom Hughes. The pair were madly in love, and after his death, Victoria wore black for the rest of her life. This series is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
The Gilded Age
This HBO series was created by Julian Fellowes, the man behind Downton Abbey. This show crosses the pond and is set in 1880s New York City. Through the central character of Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson, audiences explore the race and class differences of the time. There is new money, old money, and the domestic workers who care for them. Society is a harsh judge and skeptical of progress.
Sanditon
Bridgerton fans are actually credited with saving this series. It was created in partnership with ITV, PBS, and BritBox and set in the Regency era. The plot is based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel. The central character is the feisty Charlotte Heywood, played by Rose Williams, and the plot details her quest for love. She just so happens to find herself in the seaside town of Sanditon.
The Great
Let's travel to Russia for this offering. This series also messes with historical facts and is perfect for those who love comedy. It tells the somewhat true story of Empress Catherine the Great, played by Elle Fanning. Her husband, Emperor Peter III, is played by Nicholas Hoult. The two actors have great chemistry, even if their characters don't exactly love each other.
