A thirty-eight-year-old father from Florida has been charged with the murder of his 6-month-old son after a horrific physical incident. The man had previously been arrested after it was discovered that he had been blowing a leaf blower at his infant son because he thought it was funny.
A Florida dad has been arrested for the murder of his 6-month-old baby.
According to People, James Westervelt of Ocala, Florida, has been charged with first-degree murder for the 2024 death of his 6-month-old son.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office were called to Westervelt’s home in the summer of 2024 after a report was made about an unresponsive infant. The baby was taken to a local hospital and placed on life support, but he died several days later, per the magazine.
Doctors were able to determine that the infant’s cause of death was blunt force trauma that was caused by violent shaking or what’s commonly referred to as shaken baby syndrome, People reported via WCJB.
The dad had previously been arrested after a leaf blower incident involving his infant son.
Horrifically, prior to the fatal incident, there was video that surfaced that showed the father blowing air on the same child with a leaf blower because he thought it was funny, People reported.
According to The Independent UK, deputies found video showing Westervelt using the yard tool in the infant’s face when he was even younger. Investigators reported that the video showed that this act caused the child to have difficulties breathing, per WCJB.
According to arrest records, Westervelt was initially charged with second-degree murder without premeditation, but prosecutors dismissed that charge and re-filed a first-degree murder charge on July 30, 2026, People reported.
