Former Bachelor star Sean Lowe and his family faced a very scary situation, and now, he’s sharing his story. In an emotional video that he and wife Catherine shared on Instagram on Monday, he revealed that their family’s dog, Moose, had attacked him twice in a 12-hour period, and it was such a terrifying experience that Sean was convinced the dog was trying to kill him.
Sean opened up about a ‘traumatic’ experience his family had over the weekend.
As he explained in the video, he was hosting friends for a barbecue while Catherine was out with their three children. Smoke from the grill drifted into the house through an open window, setting off their fire alarm. The sound of the alarm triggered Moose, a Boxer, who Sean said “[showed] his teeth” and attacked.
“I feel him ripping into the flesh of my arm and at this point I’m doing everything I possibly can just to fend this dog off,” he said, per People, adding that he felt like he was “fighting for my life here against my dog.”
His injuries were so severe he rushed to the emergency room.
Sean was left with a cut on his arm that was so deep there was a “pool of blood” on the floor, and his friends rushed him to the ER, where he was given stitches. He was still processing the attack the next morning when Moose came after him again in the yard.
Moose broke free from the door that was keeping him separated from the family.
According to Sean, less than 12 hours had passed when the dog attacked him again.
“I’ve got a hold of his collar but I know he’s ripped my arm open and I just know I’m fighting for my life here. I feel like if this dog gets up, he’s going to kill me,” he said. “It took everything I had to control this dog and I’m 220 pounds. If it were anyone else, he would’ve killed my children or my wife.”
He was finally able to hold Moose off for about 10 minutes until the police and an ambulance crew came to his aid, and Sean’s next round of injuries required more stitches.
Moose only joined the family three months ago.
In December, the family adopted Moose, who is a rescue dog estimated to be about 7 years old.
Sean and Catherine have decided it’s no longer safe for Moose to be around their family and children, so they are working with animal control and a no-kill shelter to find him a new home. He thinks Moose may have experienced trauma before finding his way to their family that caused him to behave this way and become “an actual killer.”
Despite what happened, he said they are still “torn up” about the decision to say goodbye to Moose. “We miss our dog, as crazy as it sounds,” he said.
