Beyoncé Says Blue Ivy Read Renaissance Tour Criticism & It Made Her Work Harder

Beyoncé and Jay-Z's 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy became such a regular fixture at the Renaissance Tour that it's hard to imagine the lineup without her, but it wasn't always meant to be that way. According to a new review of the tour's big-screen debut, not only was Blue's appearance on stage originally meant to be a one-off, but she also couldn't help but read negative comments about her performance online — and of course, it had an impact on her, like that kind of public criticism would for any child or adult.

Blue joined her mom on stage for 'My Power.'

Though Beyoncé had already performed the a few shows on the tour without her daughter on stage with her, that all changed during their stop in France. Blue showed off her moves in front of the packed stadium and immediately became a fixture of the tour choreography for "My Power."

Beyoncé didn't think Blue performing was a good idea.

According to the New York Times review of the Renaissance tour movie, Beyoncé wasn't on board with Blue joining her on stage at all at first, and even when she did eventually agree, it was only for Blue to perform at that one show in France.

"She told me she was ready to perform, and I told her no," Beyoncé said in the movie.

Not everyone was immediately impressed with Blue's skills.

The movie also revealed that Beyoncé felt "dismayed" when Blue read the comments about that first performance online, calling it "lackluster." But that only made her want to work harder to show her mom's audiences what she could really do — something that the New York Times reported "thrilled her mother."

Fans are heartbroken to know that Blue was hurt by the comments.

Although dancing with Beyoncé is obviously the pinnacle of many dancers' careers, it's also important to remember that Blue is a kid and those comments couldn't have been easy for her to read.

"Blue Ivy knowing & reading you all’s comments about her breaks my heart. She’s just a kid. I know y’all are twisting this to show that she’s 'resilient,' but we do need to realize that no child should have to be resilient," one person tweeted on X (formerly Twitter). "The way y’all discuss & treat kids are disturbing."

It appears Blue really was motivated to work harder.

In one video, a fan on TikTok shared comparing Blue's first performance on the tour with her most recent one, it's clear that a lot of growth happened in those months. She seems to have gained a lot more confidence on stage, too!

We can't blame Beyoncé for wanting to protect her baby, but we really do have to give Blue credit for taking criticism and using it as motivation.
