Parents are role models, right? Well, yes, but they’re also human, and some of these celebrity parents are open about their recreational weed habits. Whether you’re for or against it, it’s still a touchy subject in our society. So while it may seem uncommon for celebrity moms and dads to be open about their smoking habits, there’s actually a lot more out there than you might think.
Now that recreational marijuana is legal is several states (California being one of them), we might see more celebrities being open about smoking — and yes, some of these are likely to be parents. But before people start getting all judgmental about this, let’s remember that celebrities are people, too, and everyone has a right to do what they want in the comfort of their own homes if they abide by the laws of their state.
Whether it was in their youth, or if they still partake now, a lot of celebrity moms and dads see no issue in indulging in the occasional joint. Get ready, because some of these celeb weed smokers are pretty surprising.
Madonna
In 2009, Madonna admitted to David Letterman that weed was to blame for her infamous F-bomb in an interview with him. She said, “It wasn’t because I was excited about you. I think it may have had something to do with the joint I smoked before I came on.” You tell him, Madonna.
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg wrote a whole column for the Denver Post (Colorado, huh? Makes sense) about how much she loves the benefits of marijuana. She also described her close relationship with her vaporizer pen. But, hopefully it’s not as close as her relationship with daughter, Alexandrea Martin.
Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell went on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast in 2018 and revealed that she smokes around her husband, Dax Shepard. Many called her actions “inconsiderate,” as her husband is sober. No need to worry, though. Dax took to Twitter to defend his wife’s decision — so all is good in their house!
Megan Fox
The actress and mom of three sons has always been vocal about her appreciation of smoking weed. Way back in 2009, she told British GQ of the drug, “I hope they legalize it, and when they do, I’ll be the first f—ing person in line to buy my pack of joints.” It doesn’t get more clear cut than that. She loves the ganja.
Anna Faris
Anna Faris, who shares her son Jack with her ex-husband, Chris Pratt, has been open about her weed usage. She even has a bong-shaped Stony award, which is basically the equivalent of an Oscar, from High Times magazine. “Mine’s up on the mantel. And occasionally, it gets used,” she told GQ of where she keeps her award.
Cameron Diaz
She may not have been a mom at the time, but Cameron Diaz once bought weed from the Snoop Dogg while they were both in high school together. “I was green even in high school!” she said on Lopez Tonight in 2011. Now Cameron is mom to daughter Raddix, which honestly is just the kind of name someone who gets high might think up.
Matthew McConaughey
Here’s another celebrity weed story with ties to Snoop Dogg. While filming the Beach Bum, Snoop swapped a prop joint with a real one for one of Matthew McConaughey’s scenes. But he was probably used to it, since the actor was allegedly high when he came up with his infamous “alright, alright, alright” catchphrase.
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore was once spotted sharing a joint with Cameron Diaz, so who’s to say she still doesn’t enjoy a smoke every now and again. After all, motherhood and being a Hollywood mogul is stressful! In addition to her two actual children, Drew’s other babies include her makeup line Flower Beauty and her popular talk show.
Charlize Theron
Even though she didn’t get into weed until later in her life, Charlize Theron is open about her smoking indulgence and even says it helps with her sleeping issues. “I’m always willing to try anything,” she told Jimmy Kimmel while on his show. “You got one life to live, why not?” She added that her mom is the one who helped her buy the stuff.
Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani has several songs that allude to weed and smoking, and it turns out that her fiancé, Blake Shelton, may smoke with her. On a recent episode of The Voice, Gwen didn’t turn around for a Bob Marley cover artist, which shocked Blake. “I thought for sure you would’ve turned around for a Bob Marley song … we use ALL of his products!” Blake said.
Kris Jenner
Now that marijuana is legal in California, this famous momager decided to celebrate her daughter Kourtney Kardashian’s 39th birthday by lighting up a joint. Anyone who watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians knows that Kris Jenner likes to do anything to stay young or look cool, so it was really only a matter of time before she picked up a joint.
Khloé Kardashian
Kris isn’t the only Kardashian-Jenner lady who’s indulged in the ganja. Back before Khloé welcomed her daughter, True, into the world, she’d been spotted with a joint in her hand during a trip to Costa Rica. Does she still smoke weed now that she’s a mom? We don’t know, but she seemingly has before.
Susan Sarandon
Susan Sarandon has been in the business for a long time, and that’s meant she’s attended many awards shows and red carpet events. And guess what? She told Andy Cohen that she showed up stoned to most of them. “I would say almost all except the Oscars,” she said in 2013. We love that the Academy Awards are where she drew the line.
Amy Poehler
According to E! News, Amy Poehler still smokes on occasion but since becoming a mom, she’s cut back a lot. “I can’t perform, drive, or write stoned, and therefore I smoke pot a lot less than I used to,” Amy wrote in her memoir. “The next day is the thing I can’t pull off anymore. How do you explain to your kids that you can’t play Rescue Bots because you have to spend all day in bed eating Cape Cod potato chips and watching the Bicycle Thief?”
Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2017 that she accidentally smoked real weed on set of her film Woodstock. Turns out, an actual joint made its way into the prop ones. “I’ve never been that stoned in my entire life,” she said, which implied that the mom had also indulged in smoking pot before that incident.
Nicole Richie
Back in 2007, Nicole Richie was arrested for driving under the influence after smoking marijuana and taking Vicodin. That was a long time ago, though. Now that she’s a mom of two (her daughter and son were born in 2008 and 2009, respectively), she isn’t getting herself into trouble the way she used to.
Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand may be a world-renowned singer, but she once admitted that she’s so gripped by stage fright that she turned to weed to self-soothe. “It was great, it relieved all my tensions,” she said. “I started lighting live joints, passing them around to the band. Other acts up and down the Las Vegas Strip heard about what I was doing and started sending me the best dope in the world. I never ran out.”
Frances McDormand
It’s hard to imagine the nun from the 1998 Madeline movie smoking weed, but actor Frances McDormand has indeed admitted that she’s “a recreational pot smoker.” She has also said she’s an advocate for legalizing weed, especially for medical use. Guess she’s probably not getting cast as another nun now.
Melissa Etheridge
Melissa Etheridge doesn’t just smoke weed herself — the singer once admitted that she has also smoked with her oldest kids — then 20-year-old daughter Bailey and 18-year-old son Beckett. “It was funny at first, and then they realized it’s very natural,” the singer said. “It brings you closer. I’d much rather have a smoke with my grown kids than a drink.”
Goldie Hawn
Goldie Hawn is apparently not your average mom, because she’s smoked weed with not one, but both of her kids — actors Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson. Kate is also a big marijuana fan herself. She once posed in a pot-leaf belt for Rolling Stone and she loves to celebrate 4/20.
Sarah Palin
Now this one might come has a shock, but former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is weed’s most surprising advocate. She doesn’t even see a problem with legalizing marijuana. And, coming from Alaska, where pot is legal, she has admitted to smoking it in the past. You learn something new every day.
Alanis Morissette
Alanis Morissette told High Times that smoking weed has helped her creative process — because of course. “As an artist, there’s a sweet jump-starting quality to [marijuana] for me,” the singer said. “If ever I need some clarity or a quantum leap in terms of writing something, it’s a quick way for me to get to it.”
Brad Pitt
Some sources have said that Brangelina’s big breakup came as a result of Brad Pitt’s weed habit. Allegedly, Angelina Jolie was tired of having that kind of an environment around their kids, since Brad is a pretty infamous marijuana indulger. Now that they’re divorced, it’s unclear whether Brad had continued to smoke or not.
Anne Hathaway
Andy Cohen got Anne Hathaway to open up about her smoking habits by asking, “On a scale of 1 to 10, how big of a stoner is Anne Hathaway?” She replied, “I’m not a little one,” before hastily adding, “Here’s the thing, though. I’m a parent and I don’t feel like getting arrested, so I’m gonna say ‘zero.’ I guess I should have just pleaded the fifth on that one. But I don’t have a card or anything.”
Jay-Z
Jay-Z may be a father of three, but Beyoncé’s husband is also such a marijuana fan that he has his own brand of weed called Monogram. According to GQ magazine, the rapper’s weed factory takes up 100,000 square feet in San Jose, California. And he markets the product as a luxury item for glamorous tokers. Anything to stand out.
