What to Know
Some celebrities just don’t get it. And can we expect them to, really? With all of that privilege and wealth. It’s not like they’re living an average lifestyle where people have to grind for 40 to 50 years to squeeze out some semblance of retirement. They’re on lavish movie sets and earning multi million dollar pay checks. Keeping that in mind, some people online are a little annoyed at actress Emily Blunt after she gave some rather insensitive career advice. Seriously, does she have no clue about what the economy or job market is like right now? Probably not!
Emily Blunt is in hot water after shelling out some controversial career advice.
Oh, Emily Blunt. All that talent and beauty and you’re still sticking your foot in your mouth!
In an interview with co-star Stanley Tucci to promote their film, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Emily Blunt was asked to share some advice for girls who are unhappy with their jobs. If you’ve seen the first movie, you’ll know that this is a central theme in the hit film.
The advice that she gave left a lot to be desired, especially if you’re not someone who is either a mega rich celebrity who has no trouble paying their bills or living off their mom and dad’s dime. She said, “Just find something that you deeply want to do. Even if you’re earning no money, as long as you love it, you’ll be happy.”
As you can imagine, Emily has been pretty much torn to shreds for giving this career advice during a time when people can barely afford their rent.
Online critics are calling this advice seriously unhelpful.

Sometimes it’s better to just keep certain thoughts to ourselves. Unfortunately for Emily, this was one of those times.
In this Reddit thread, there are loads of frustrated online critics who are not standing for someone of wealth and privilege giving this kind of out of touch perspective. One person shared, “Great advice, just don’t eat and live in a cardboard box!”
Another individual in the comments spelled things out pretty plainly for a situation that a lot of people end up finding themselves in. “Most people end up doing jobs they either actively dislike, or at the very least don’t give a s— about. Because we actually do need the money,” they wrote.
Another Redditor made a great point when they commented, “Did you notice only the wealthy have made the ‘do what you love!! It doesn’t matter if it pays like s—!!” Statement? I’ve never heard a person scraping by say this. Ever.”
While there were a few people coming to Emily’s defense in the comments, stating that she was in a lose-lose situation when being asked this type of question, most seem to think she could have handled things better. “She could have very easily made this a more nuanced answer though,” one person wrote.
This is not the first time that the actress has been called insensitive.
In October 2023, Emily faced backlash when an old interview resurfaced where she referred to a server as “enormous.” Even though she released a statement to People, calling the language that she used in the interview “insensitive” and “hurtful,” people were pretty baffled by her behavior.
This Reddit thread is filled with people who did not love seeing such a talented actress say such a disrespectful thing about another human being. One person in the thread couldn’t help but wonder that if the interview didn’t resurface, would she have spoken out about it at all? “She’s only appalled and sorry because it got traction. It’s been years and now she’s in a reflective mood? Please. She’s in campaign mode for best supporting actress,” they wrote.
Another person in the comments just figured she’s another celebrity with low morals. “She is a famous person I would just assume isn’t all that nice. Just the energy she gives off. Same with her husband. It’s nice she apologized but that poor server :(,” they wrote. That doesn’t seem like a completely fair take.
We will say that it is difficult when you’re someone who has a career that’s very public and requires interviews because the internet is forever and people tend to not forget things. Hopefully, Emily did mean that apology and she’s mindful about what language she uses.
