ESPN Anchor’s Coffee Shop Story Sparks Backlash After Golfer’s Fiancée Calls Him Out

ESPN’s SportsCenter anchor Gary Striewski has painted himself into a really awkward corner after he shared a story of an interaction he had with a golf WAG recently that is turning into a lot of sports drama.

On TikTok, he claimed that he had a strange run-in with an unnamed fiancée of a golfer in a Connecticut coffee shop, but now that the woman is sharing her side of the story, it sounds like he definitely wasn’t telling the whole truth.

He took to TikTok to share the story of a “weird a– interaction” he had recently.

Gary told the story in a way that you can just tell he thought everyone was going to take his side and confirm he was right, but that just means he was wrong twice, judging by the way people are reacting to this whole fiasco.

To set the scene, Gary was in town for the Travelers Championship and stopped into a coffee shop when he recognized a golfer and his fiancée. While the golfer was at the counter, Gary approached his fiancée and said, “Has anyone spotted you yet?”

He claimed that the woman responded, “I guess now” in a way that made him feel like she wanted to be left alone, and Gary was fully taken aback that she wasn’t friendlier, since as someone who openly shares her life with tens of thousands of followers, she should expect to be approached in public.

Juju Chan revealed that the WAG he was talking about is her.

Even though Gary didn’t name any names, Juju Chan — whose fiancé is golfer Sahith Theegala — posted a video identifying herself as the woman he was talking about and accused him of spreading a “false narrative.”

“As this person is sitting down, [he] directly says, ‘Has anyone spotted you yet?’ To me, that’s not a normal thing that people would say to me,” she said. “I don’t know who this person is. It’s a weird comment to me, but I looked over, and I just laughed. I said, ‘I guess now.’ I said it lightheartedly. I was uncomfortable with the comment, but I was also trying to laugh it off.”

She went on to share how she feels about him sharing the story more widely: “I think it’s extremely unprofessional given the line of work he’s in. To encourage people to hate on me, that’s uncool.”

The internet is taking Juju’s side on this.

Not only did her fiancé comment on the video and say that Gary “should have never put you in a position like this,” but her followers also came to her defense in the comments.

“It was a weird comment. His video talking about it was equally weird,” one person wrote.

Another pointed out that the situation “feels very much like typical behavior of males feeling entitled to females time and attention.”

Juju might have a lot of followers, but that doesn’t mean that Gary — or any other total stranger — actually knows her. Maybe she just wanted to drink her coffee in peace?
