Kate Middleton’s Brother James Says Prince William Helped Her ‘Blossom’

Many people change after they get married — after all, it’s a major milestone — but that change isn’t always for the better. Fortunately, in Kate Middleton‘s case, marrying Prince William (and into the royal family) only made her “blossom” into who she was meant to be, according to what her brother, James Middleton, writes in his new memoir. When Will finally popped the question, it sounds like the whole family was happy.

James spilled the details on the early days of Will and Kate's relationship.

In his new book, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, which is due out next week, James wrote about his family, including his sister-turned-royal, Kate. In an excerpt that was published by the Daily Mail, not only did James share the inside scoop on Will and Kate’s engagement, but also what he really thinks about his royal brother-in-law.

He opened up about how the family found out that Will had popped the question.

While Will and Kate officially announced the news with an interview and photo call, per royal tradition — and after nearly a decade of dating — Kate was able to fill her family in ahead of time.

“There is a terrific buzz throughout the country because the rumour is spreading that Catherine and William are about to get engaged,” James wrote. “Our family know a day or so before it is officially announced in November 2010.”

Kate, James, and their sister, Pippa, all went out for a walk together.

When they stopped into a pub, Kate decided to quietly share the big news with them before the rest of the world found out.

“We sit in a corner, chattering quietly. Catherine whispers the news and says it will become public in the next day or so. Pippa and I want to be visibly excited, but we have to tamp down our emotions so no one suspects a thing,” James wrote in the book. “We make a quiet acknowledgement that we’ll always be there for each other, look out for one another, support each other. No matter how crazy things get.”

At that point, Will felt like James and Pippa's 'older brother.'

After nine years, the family had gotten the chance to know William well, and James knew that they were “so clearly a good fit, just right for each other.”

“I thought how lucky William was to be marrying my capable, down-to-earth big sister, and I felt absolutely reassured that they were in love,” he added.

William still has James' approval.

It’s been more than 13 years since Will and Kate tied the knot, and James said not only did he help his sister come out of her shell, but he knows that William still has Kate’s back the way he always has — something that has likely become even more important to the Middletons amid Kate’s health crisis this year.

“It was beautiful to see how he brought out her confidence. She’d blossomed,”  he wrote. “I knew he’d look after her, and he does to this day.”
