Janet Jackson Has Some Strange Thoughts on Kamala Harris: ‘She’s Not Black’

Janet Jackson appears to be buying into the conspiracy theory that Vice President Kamala Harris isn’t Black. In an interview with The Guardian — in which she talked about motherhood, Michael Jackson, and taking back control of her life — the 58-year-old “That’s the Way Love Goes” singer was asked her thoughts on America potentially having its first Black female president. “Well, you know what they supposedly said?” Janet responded. “She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”

The journalist pushed back on Janet's response.

Journalist Nosheen Iqbal pushed back on Janet’s response during the interview, saying, “Well, she’s both.” Janet responded, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”

The conspiracy theory started when Donald Trump publicly questioned Kamala Haris' race.

During an interview with ABC News’ Rachel Scott during the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago, former President Donald Trump questioned Kamala Harris’ identity. “She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black,” he said. “So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?” He went on to say that while he “respects either one,” Harris doesn’t.

Janet is also unsure of if America is 'ready' for a Black female president.

When asked if she thinks America is ready for a woman of color as president, the singer replied, “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”

She continued her uncertainty, adding. “I think there might be mayhem. Either way it goes, but we’ll have to see.”

It's been proven that the race claims are false.

In reports from CNN and the Associated Press, the claims about Harris not being Black have been proven to be false. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is an immigrant from Jamaica. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was from India. Her parents met at University of California, Berkeley.

Social media users responded to Janet's interview.

“Vote for who you want, but stop litigating people’s identities. This racist behavior is played out. We need to be better than that,” one person wrote. “Kamala’s father was a black Jamaican man,” another person wrote. “Why is this even being disputed?? Seriously! This is like the Obama birth certificate!!!!” Another commenter joked, “But your brother said it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white!… 👀🙄😒😂.”

An apology said to have come from the singer is now claimed to have not been issued by her.

A statement from Mo Elmasri claimed that the singer was sorry for comments about Harris “based on misinformation.” A representative for Janet, however, said that Mo does not represent the pop star at all and that the “apology” was unauthorized.
