JD Vance Says Joy Reid Should Be More Grateful & People Are Calling Him a Hypocrite

People are pretty tired of JD Vance begging people to say “thank you.” When the vice president took to social media to complain about former MSNBC host Joy Reid and how she should show more “gratitude,” it reminded people of how he treated Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky. Earlier this year, Vance told Zelensky that he should be more grateful for the United States.

“Have you said thank you once?” Vance said to Zelensky at the time. Even when Zelensky told Vance that he’s thanked the U.S. for its support “a lot of times,” Vance pushed back with, “No, in this entire meeting, have you said thank you? Offer some words of appreciation for the U.S.A. and the president who’s trying to save your country.”

Many critics found the way Vance spoke to the Ukrainian president to be patronizing and embarrassing. And now, he’s directed a similar comment at Joy Reid. According to Vance, Reid is also not expressing enough “gratitude” for the U.S. For some reason, he took to X to share his unsolicited advice with her.

Reacting to a clip in which Reid said, “when my mother came from Guyana she realized it is not a land of opportunity for people like us,” Vance said the former MSNBC host seems to have a lot of “contempt” even though she has “such a good life.”

“Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country,” Vance wrote. “It’s been overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most. Yet she oozes with contempt. My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you’d be a much happier person if you showed a little gratitude.”

In response, one critic shared their own “non-trolling advice” with Vance: “No one is asking for your advice.” Another critic wrote, “Dude literally cannot stop demanding people thank him.”

Several other critics took it a step further and called Vance out for his apparent hypocrisy. “What is with JD and people showing gratitude,” one of them wrote. “Has JD ever said thank you to the American people?”

Others agreed that maybe Vance should be more grateful. “Looks like projection to me, JD,” someone else responded. “You really need to be more [grateful] to the system that elevated you to your current position despite no notable accomplishments or redeeming qualities.”

After all, in spite of their wealth, power, and privilege, Vance and President Donald Trump seem pretty angry too, another person argued. “You are describing yourself, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, basically everyone in your administration, wildly wealthy and filled with hate and contempt for half the country, its universities, its courts. You guys are just filled with hate for the country that made you wildly successful,” they wrote.

Besides, another person pointed out that Reid has the right to speak up about issues that matter to her. “Joy Reid worked hard and overcame many obstacles to be where she is today,” they wrote. “Nobody gave her a small $1 million loan to start up life. She doesn’t owe gratitude to you or anyone else. And if you don’t like her using her platform to speak truth to power, no matter how uncomfortable, then that’s a YOU problem.”
