Janelle & Christine Brown Say Their Kids Lack the ‘Religious Conviction’ To Be Polygamous

After walking away from their own plural marriage to Kody Brown, Sister Wives stars Janelle Brown and Christine Brown don't seem to believe that their children will end up in the same situation — but not why some fans might think. In a new interview with People, Janelle and Christine admitted that they don't think their children are cut out to be happy with a life of polygamy, and the main reason for that is because the religious beliefs behind the lifestyle simply aren't there.

So far, none of their adult children has chosen polygamy.

Even though Janelle and Christine's children were raised by a polygamous family — their shared father, Kody, had four wives and 18 children — the moms don't seem surprised at all that they decided against living the same lives their parents did. In fact, none of them has even continued to be part of the Mormon faith they were raised in.

"When they were growing up, we always just encouraged them to have a relationship with God, and I think many of them do in their own way," Janelle said. "I think polygamy is hard, and I think you really do have to have a religious conviction, and they just don't."

Religion may not be the only thing that's turned the kids off of plural marriage, though.

"Some of our kids have seen how hard it is, and some of our kids have seen the separation," Christine admitted to People. "They see how hard it is and they're like, 'No, no, no, no, no. No, that's not for me.'"

Though Kody did once have four wives, in the last couple of years, Christine, Janelle, and Meri have all chosen to walk away from the family, with Robyn being the last wife standing.

Their plans for their family didn't quite pan out.

Those who have watched Sister Wives through the years know that the goal was for everyone to live as one big, happy family, and although that ultimately didn't work out, fortunately, it appears the kids are all still as close as siblings as they've always been.

"They all interact, and I interact with the kids the same as I always did. The kids all really feel like [they're] siblings," Janelle shared. "With Christine and I, we're very close, there's a lot of camaraderie. With Meri and Robyn and Kody, to some degree, it's still very polite, superficial, not antagonistic — it's not mean."

Things aren't always easy in the family these days.

That's no surprise, considering all of the splits that have taken place, but Christine is still hopeful that it will all get better in time and that they will eventually be able to "function as a family again."

"I think we have smaller separate families that bump into each other like boats on the water and it causes ripples and it's bumpy," she said. "Sometimes it's very rough waters, but eventually, hopefully, we can be around each other and it will be calm."

Christine and Janelle do seem to be living much more peaceful lives these days.

Since leaving Kody, Christine has found new love and is planning her wedding to David Woolley, while Janelle has struck out on her own. It can't be easy starting new lives after spending more than 20 years with Kody, but so far, they both seem much happier for it.
