Kerry Washington Wears Iconic Whitney Houston Dress to American Black Film Festival Honors

Not only did Kerry Washington look amazing when she hit the red carpet at the American Black Film Festival Honors on Sunday, but she was also a walking piece of fashion history. Kerry wore Whitney Houston's iconic red dress to the event — yes, the same dress that Whitney herself wore in 1996.

Kerry wore the same velvet Marc Bouwer halter dress that Whitney wore in 1996 when she attended the BET Walk of Fame Awards Gala, Page Six reported. Considering the impact that the singer had on music during her short life, this is a major honor for Kerry.

She shared her excitement about wearing the dress on Instagram.

To celebrate the occasion, she shared a video of herself wearing the dress on Instagram. "What's cooler than wearing Whitney Houston's dress? Nothing!" Kerry noted.

"No lies told. Whitney Houston’s ACTUAL @marcbouwer dress she wore in 1996. Sooooooo incredibly special," she wrote in the caption.

Her stylist shared more details.

According to Kerry's stylist, Law Roach, this was made possible thanks to the dress' designer.

"And then THIS happened … Thank you @marcbouwer for letting me go into your archives and borrow Whitney’s dress for @kerrywashington," he wrote.

Some people had mixed feelings about the dress.

In the comments of Kerry's Instagram post, some people couldn't stop gushing about how amazing the Scandal star looked, but other people were less than impressed.

"Why do y’all like wearing dead people’s clothes?? I genuinely would like to be educated," one person wrote.

She's not the first celebrity to wear an iconic dress from fashion history.

Kim Kardashian famously wore Marilyn Monroe's dress to the 2022 Met Gala, and she also got plenty of backlash for bringing that dress out of the archives.

Between Kim and Kerry, it seems like this might be a trend. Which iconic dress will be next to make its way on the red carpet all over again — and who will be wearing it?
