Michael Oher’s Lawyers Claim He Was ‘Kept in the Dark’ About His Money for 19 Years

Michael Oher’s lawyers have been busy these last few weeks. In a new filing, they’re talking about the former football player’s finances, claiming that he "has been kept in the dark" for nearly two decades about what exactly the Tuohys did with his money under their conservatorship. His attorneys are requesting that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy file an initial accounting of his finances within the next two weeks. He is asking that the court have the Tuohys clarify just how much of their money has been made off of his name since the release of the movie The Blind Side in 2009.

Michael was unaware of the conservatorship and control until earlier this year.

Michael added three new attorneys to his team this week, according to People, and now they’re asking for the accounting of all of the money earned from the film. In 2004, the Tuohys entered into a conservatorship with Michael that put them in charge of his finances.

Apparently, the Tuohys are allegedly behind on their accounting.

"[The Tuohys] have failed to file the first accounting and have failed to timely file a single accounting for the last 19 years," Michael’s lawyers wrote in the new filing. They demanded that the Shelby County probate court have the Tuohys file the initial accounting within two weeks.

They also added that there was never an extension granted, so there’s no reason for the lack of accounting over the years. Due to the lack of a paper trail, they explained that Michael has been "forced to rely on the verbal assurances from his co-conservators" when it comes to his finances.

Michael's team claims the Tuohys are still making money off of his story.

Since last week’s request from Michael regarding the accounting of the finances, and also the ending of the conservatorship, his lawyers claim that the Tuohys "nevertheless have ignored his request and continue to use his name, likeness, and image," though where has not been specified.

His real earnings from 'The Blind Side' are being called into question.

The Tuohys made $250,000 from the movie, plus 2.5% in residuals. The movie ended up grossing more than $300 million at the box office, plus more money in distribution deals in the decade since its release.

Because the Tuohys allegedly haven’t filed an accounting of Michael’s finances, he "was excluded from knowing the full extent of any contracts negotiated on his behalf by his co-conservators, that he has no knowledge of the income generated through said contracts, and that he has no knowledge of the income generated from the co-conservators’ use of his name, likeness, and image."

The Tuohys claim they didn't make much money from the film.

"Instead of protecting that asset and ensuring that [Michael Oher] received the full benefits therefrom, the co-conservators [Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy] took this asset and have used it to enrich themselves at [Michael Oher’s] expense," Michael’s lawyers wrote.

The Tuohys still maintain that they did not make millions from The Blind Side. A source close to the family told People that they received $700,000 total in rights, payments and profits, which they intended to divide between themselves, their children, and Michael.
