Criminals hit the Baker Street branch of Lloyds Bank, where the wealthiest people stashed their valuables.
The eight-part docuseries kicks off with the scandalous story of the Baker Street robbery, which dives deep into the backstory of the crime to uncover how (and why) criminals dug 40 feet into the basement vault of the bank, stealing today's equivalent of nearly $44 million in the process.
Rumor has it that the real motive for the robbery had less to do about nabbing cash and more to do with disposing of photos of the Queen's sister caught in a sexual act with a criminal.
Much like a suitcase stuffed with $44 million, there's a lot to unpack here.
According to the series, the Queen's security team may have staged the whole thing to get their hands on the photos.
It sounds like the producers have plenty of evidence to back up their claims, with the Daily Mail reporting that the show reveals there was a government gag order (called a D notice) issued to prevent any news coverage or National Archives footage from being released until 2071.
Experts dished about what could've possibly gone down during the robbery as they reflect in the new documentary.

A criminologist at London's City University asked what possible reason the government could have for embargoing the documents for so long. "What's being covered up," Emmeline Thomas asks in the series premier. "Why is this a national secret?"
One possibly working theory is that the photos are so damaging that high-ranking members of the government and the royal family could possibly be blackmailed to keep them from seeing the light of day.
What could make a princess fall in love with a gangster?

With everything she had going for her, it may seem strange that the princess would've had a connection to a criminal, but maybe it had more to do with the romantic backdrop of the island of Mustique, where Margaret frequented and was even photographed (fully clothed) with John while they vacationed.

If this story sounds familiar, that's because it is.
Jason Stathan's 2008 film The Bank Job was based on the robbery, highlighting the possibly connection between the heist and Princess Margaret.
But that's not all. Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote of a similar tale in one of his Sherlock Holmes stories.
Could this have been where the criminals drew inspiration? Or maybe just an unusual coincidence? (Baker Street is also where Sherlock lived in the books.) Hopefully the Greatest Heists has some answers because boy … do we have some questions.
The series will debut Monday, May 1.
