The other morning, I was making my breakfast at work: toast with peanut butter and sugar (healthy, eh?). It's something that my grandmother and mother often made for breakfast when I was growing up, so I never thought anything of it.
But when a co-worker gave me a weird look as I was sprinkling on the sugar, I realized that maybe my family's concoction wasn't quite a traditional spread for toast.
So let's get creative and steer away from the boring butter and jelly combo. Here are 15 more different spreads to enjoy on your toast.
Marshmallow Fluff: To satisfy your sweet tooth, top with marshmallow fluff. Add some cocoa to make a s'mores-like version.
Butter and Maple Syrup: Known as the "Poor Man's French Toast," it tastes similar to French toast, you just have to eat it quicky because it gets soggy super fast.
The Elvis: Much like the Elvis sandwich, peanut butter topped with bananas. Add bacon to make it a true Elvis.
Cinnamon and Sugar: So simple, and yet, so good. Spread a little bit of butter on the toast so the cinnamon and sugar stick, then add about a 30/70 mixture of the two (respectively).
Salt: Toast sprinkled with salt was made popular in England when a contestant of their Big Brother reality TV series did it.
Fruit Rind: Spread on butter and then for a citrus-y kick, sprinkle finely grated rinds of orange, lemon, or grapefruit. Add some sugar so its not so bitter.
Homemade Butters: I love going into restaurants that have bread baskets paired with homemade butters like almond butter, apple butter, or honey butter.
Cream Cheese: This spread isn't just good on bagels. Add the same toppings that you normally would: lox, tomatoes, scallions, etc.
Hawaiian: Little bits of ham and pineapple. Aloha!
Pesto Paste: This is a good spread of brunch or lunch toast.
Mashed Banana: Add cinnamon or crushed almonds for added flavor.
Strawberry Shortcake: Your favorite strawberry jelly or preserves topped with whipped cream. Mmm!
Cranberry Sauce: An easy way to use up all that leftover cranberry sauce from Thanksgiving__.__
Peanut Butter and Apples: You dip apples into peanut butter, right? Same idea, only on toast. Include raisins for an added treat.
Nutella: Nutella makes everything better. But I'm sure you already knew that.
What do you put on your toast?
