Fran Drescher Reveals the One Thing That Kept Her From Realizing Her Ex-Husband Is Gay

It is the classic story: Boy meets girl, they fall in love, they get married, he comes out as gay after 21 years … Wait, what?

Believe it or not, that is basically the story of Fran Drescher’s first marriage to Peter Marc Jacobson, the creator of her hit show The Nanny.

Drescher, who is now happily married to a “straight man who loves taking off” her clothes, was recently honored for her advocacy for gay rights at the Stonewall Community Foundation Vision Awards this week. She joked that she had a “gay art dealer, a gay dermatologist … a gay ex-husband!” but noted that she still thinks of him as her best friend.

She also revealed that people always ask her "how did you not know?" Jacobsen is gay, because after all, "he loves decorating and fashion and clothes."

The answer:

We actually did have sex a lot. … I didn't know at the time, though, that in his mind he was f—king the bartender at Olive Garden.

One hopes that Peter Marc Jacobson realizes how lucky he is to have an ex-wife who is so understanding and has so much love that she has gone the extra mile to help him find romance, even appearing with him on a reality TV dating show so he could find the man of his dreams.

Even though their marriage ended in divorce, it looks like there is still a lot of love between the couple. They even worked together to create a TV show Happily Divorced about their experience. While the show wasn’t a huge hit and only lasted two seasons, I’d say the fact that it existed at all says a lot about the relationship between Fran and her ex. I’m not sure I’d be able to be quite so at peace with it, but I’m impressed that she is.

Are you surprised that Fran Drescher is so positive about her experience having a gay husband?
