Furious Man Dumps Fiancée for Almost Killing His Dog — But Everyone Is on Her Side

Dogs are man's best friend, but what if your fiancée does your best buddy wrong? That's what one man is asking himself after his wife-to-be accidentally allowed his dog to ingest alcohol and edibles during her bachelorette party. Unable to forgive her for this potentially deadly mistake, now the man is questioning everything. Should he break up with his fiancée for putting his dog's life at risk?

The couple has been together for four years, but it was only after he got a frantic call from his fiancée that he reconsidered their relationship.

No one wants to get a call from a loved one in tears, but as the man described in a post on Reddit, his fiancée was seriously freaked after her bachelorette party. The party was at their house, and even though he warned her to keep his dog in their bedroom, things didn't go quite according to plan.

"5 am on Sunday I get a frantic call that something's wrong with the dog," he wrote. Immediately, he told her to take the dog to the emergency vet and when he met her there, he found her in tears and his dog in pretty bad shape. "When I got there, she looked like she hadn't stopped crying for hours and she couldn't even speak," he wrote. "Two of her friends were there so they told me my dog is alive but not well."

Sitting in the waiting room, he felt awful for his future wife the entire time — until the vet came out and revealed the truth.

"The doctor told me my dog ingested large amounts of alcohol and chocolate edibles." Apparently, his fiancée had allowed his dog to roam freely during the festivities, and he got into her stash of "party supplies."

"The girls apparently thought it would be cool to leave everything out on short coffee tables, leave the dog to wander around instead of putting him in our bedroom, and then get wasted and not notice he was going to town with the booze and edibles," he wrote.

Furious, the man told his fiancée that she had gone too far. He was DONE.

The two went home together, but the writer was so angry he told his fiancée to pack up and leave — the wedding was off.

"2 hours later, I get bombarded by messages on Messenger, Whatsapp, by her sisters, brother, brother's wife, her mom, her friends, telling me that I am insane to do this to her after 4 years," he wrote. "They started off defending her, but it quickly turned into insulting me."

And even his loved ones were on her side and trying to get him to reconsider. "The logical thing for me to do was look for comfort in my friends and family. Nope. They all (expletive) agree. My mom said: 'Well, it was a mistake, she didn't do it on purpose, besides — the dog didn't die!' Lucky me, eh?" he wrote. "My sister was appalled that I cancelled the wedding 'over that?!' and even my best man said I might have overreacted."

But the writer wasn't ready to cave to the pressure.

"By the way, this is not the first dumb thing she has done," he added. "She likes to text while driving, she always leaves stuff on the electric stove (like kitchen towels, the cutting board etc.) even though she has turned on the wrong burner and burnt whatever was on it several times in the past, and similar DANGEROUS things."

Although he explained that he doesn't necessarily hold her thoughtlessness against her, it does make him question getting married. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried that she might end up killing herself or someone else. I'm 99 percent sure I will stand by my decision. But am I really an (expletive)? Literally nobody is on my side and I have no idea what to think," he wondered.

But let's be clear: Other pet parents online were livid at his fiancée's carelessness.

"Part of loving someone is caring about something they care about because they care about it," one person wrote in the comments. "We know how most people care about their pet. If they don't take enough responsibility to care for their SO's pet, even if they don't like the pet, THEN they aren't the right one."

"PFFFFF, it doesn't matter who it is, it could be my own flesh and blood mother, but if their (expletive) negligence and carelessness almost got my beloved pet killed, i'd cut them out for god (expletive) sure," another person agreed.

"I mean, this level of carelessness, though. In a decade or so it wouldn't be the dog on the line but their kid," a third argued.

However, other people argued that the dog wasn't the problem. This couple has deeper issues.

"She clearly doesn’t mean that much to you, so yeah, leave over this," someone commented. "I have a cat whom I adore beyond reason and if my current BF accidentally hurt him, I’d be (expletive) and upset but your dog isn’t dead. If he’s more important than your woman, that relationship is doomed. I’ve been in a relationship where I would have chosen my cat over them. That is not a good relationship."

"People make mistakes, and over the course of a lifetime of marriage there are going to be a lot worse than letting the dog out of your room during a party," another person wrote. "If your immediate response is to turn to blame and anger, and to take things to the most extreme possible response — ending the engagement — you're not ready for marriage. Or did you think the part of the vows about loving each other for better or for worse meant 'until she screws up?'"

"I think [Original Poster] was subconsciously looking for an out and found one," chimed in someone else. "Just no one else in his social circle seems to agree with his decision. (Expletive) their feelings, it would be his miserable marriage he’s getting into if he’s this unhappy before the dog incident."

After considering the comments in his post, the writer came to a decision: It was time to say goodbye to this relationship.

"Posting here kind of triggered me to conclude this isn't about the dog at all," he wrote. "She is negligent and irresponsible and I don't want to stick around and possibly see our child die in a car accident some day because she was texting or she forgot to put his seat belt on."

He added that he'd rather upset their family now "than spend years of my life worrying every time our child is left alone with her."

"If she'd accidentally killed a person while texting and driving, I would also leave her," he added. "I guess I realized I don't want to spend my life with someone who has such blatant disregard for human (or animal) life."
