I Told My Sister She’s a ‘Sh—y Parent’ for Choosing a Ridiculous Name for Her Daughter

Giving your baby a unique name is all the rage these days. Parents don't want their kids to be like one of the 15 Jennifers in a classroom during the 1980s. Some people even go so far as to hire name fairies to help them choose a baby name. No matter how a parent names their baby, it's up to them. Right?

OK, but what if a name is so off the wall that it could cause problems down the road? Does telling someone their name might not be a great idea make you a jerk? Well, a man on Reddit's AITA forum recently gave his sister his thoughts about planning to name her daughter something pretty outrageous, and she got big mad. It's a whole thing.

Pretty sure there won't be another girl in the class with the same name.

It is quite unique, we will give the mom that, but it might be too off the wall. The original poster mentions that his name is uncommon as well, and it is a touchy subject for him. He says his sister inherited, "my parent's stupid propensity to see their children as fashion statements."

His parents named him what he called a girl's name at birth, leading to a lifetime of problems. He is just trying to save his niece from the same fate.

"My parents are hippies and gave their oldest son a girl's name to 'stick it to the man' and I will never forgive them for it," he wrote.

The baby's name is pretty out there.

OP wrote that his sister wants to name her daughter Krxstxl. First, there are no vowels, so how does that work? But we digress. He said that the name is pronounced Crystal. OP told his sister that she was naming a child, not a dog, and if she wanted the baby's name to be Crystal, then that is how she needs to spell it. OP was equally upset that his mother was in on this, knowing how much pain his name caused him.

"I told my sister she was being either selfish, stupid, or an incredibly strong combination of the two if she thinks her daughter will want a stupid name like Krxstxl. We got into an argument and I told her I already see her and her husband as sh—y parents for using their kid to be off-brand with her name and left right after," he wrote.

OP is standing by his thoughts about the name but wondering if calling her a sh—y parent was below the belt.

Redditors feel the pain.

"I had a student named this," a teacher wrote. "Signed her name Kris on everything. Didn't even try to tell me how to pronounce it, just said please call me Kris. Definitely NTA."

The name didn't even make sense to some people.

"I literally pronounced the poor baby's name as 'Kirkstl' cause whenever I see an 'x' in words it shouldn't be, I just add the 'ex' sound or omit it … that poor kid and poor OP," a Redditor commented.

OP isn't the first to have a name they don't like.

"My parents were super religious and gave me a name fitting that religion, then dropped out by the time I was 8," someone empathized. "It caused problems all the time, even with my dad picking me up from school because he had the most generic name ever. Children are not accessories they are human being who's best interest you are supposed to look out for."

There is just no time for this craziness, according to some Redditors.

Many people had big opinions about Krxstxl and weren't supportive.

"I'm so sick of this s–t," a Redditor wrote. "'Oh it's pronounced Crystal!' No it f—ing isn't. Letters have corresponding sounds and the letters OP's sister picked do not correspond with the name she is claiming. NTA, your sister sucks."

But some agreed that calling the sister a bad parent was the wrong way to go about things.

"You were harsh," one Redditor commented. "And probably coming from a place of resentment about your own name. However, I'm going with NTA. Names can be crippling to people and making your child's name about you is really selfish. She will literally have to explain her name and her parents choice to people thousands of times. Unique names are one thing …"

"Perhaps you were a bit harsh," another person wrote. "But your parents and your sister are both putting their needs and wants above those of their children. That is a sh—y way to start out parenting! So I'm going with NTA."

Krxstxl is a hard pass for Redditors.

OP, are you wrong about the name? No, not according to Redditors. Could you have been a bit kinder? Yes, probably so. People get that you are just trying to protect someone from the pain you and many others have experienced with an unusual name.

Maybe in time, your sister will change her mind. Shoot, that may even happen after Krxstxl is born. If it's a huge problem for her, and her family, they might return to a more traditional spelling. We'll have our fingers crossed.
