The struggle to make hooded eyes look more alive with makeup is real. It takes some serious skill and a serious understanding of the anatomy of eyes to make it happen, and only the chosen few are able. But one very talented Redditor is changing that.
This woman's step-by-step pictorial posted less than 24 hours ago already has thousands of reactions and hundreds of comments. It's easy to follow, and may make those with hooded eyes rethink their eye shadow routines.
Has she just unlocked the key to mastering makeup on hooded eyelids? We think so.
The first step, she wrote, is to figure out where your crease lies.

"I first start by mapping out my crease with my eye open. This helps me determine where I want my shadows (as in contours of the eye) to fall. By doing it with the eye open, you can see exactly where you are placing the new crease," she began the thread, showing the result of sweeping a transition color right above her crease.
Then she adds a darker shade for dimension.

The added color makes for a more blended look.
"After blending [the first shade] out, I then deepen the crease shade with a darker colour. For this, I keep it along the shape I’ve created making sure not to bring it in too much. This prevents deepening the natural shadow in the fold of my eyelid," she noted.
Who knew shimmer had a greater purpose than just looking pretty?

"Then it’s time to add the lid shade," she recommended. "For this, I find it is best to use a shimmer or satin shade, because it will reflect light which makes the eyelid fold less pronounced looking. I bring this above my natural eyelid crease, up to where I mapped out my new crease. I bring it almost completely to the outer corner as well."
Then it's time for more blending.

And no need for a new brush; she used the same one she began with for a flawless blend.
"I then blend back over the shimmer just around the edges to make sure everything is seamless. I usually just take my same brushes I used for my earlier crease shades with no extra product on them," she wrote.
After some finishing touches, a visibly wider-looking eye was revealed.

After she added a little extra shimmer in the inner corner for even more eye brightness and a much-needed lash lift, the look was complete.
"I finish with some final touches: mascara, inner-corner highlight, and bring my crease shade along the lower lash line," she said of the finished product.
The results are astounding.

"Here’s a comparison shot with a few different angles. Both are technically well applied and look pretty but have very different results! By following my natural crease and using eyeliner, it exaggerates my natural shadows of my eye to create a smaller looking eye, almost more sultry look," she said of the final look, comparing it with an eye with heavy liner.
Well, who would have thunk it?

The trick to mastering hooded eyes may be easier than any of us had thought. Who knew a little patience and a lot of shimmer could result in a much more awake, brighter appearance? So to all those makeup lovers out there who have struggled with achieving this look, we hope you took some good notes.
Happy blending!
