All over YouTube, vloggers have been visiting their city's worst-rated makeup artists according to Yelp and creating hilarious videos that often resulted in complete cosmetic disasters. The challenges are usually lighthearted and comical and keep the makeup artists anonymous.
However, a recent YouTuber's try at the challenge didn't quite hide the poorly rated artist's identity that well, and the screwup is costing her fans and subscribers. Mariale Marrero, a YouTuber with over 2 million subscribers, is feeling the heat after friends of the makeup artist in question discovered the video, and it isn't pretty.
The worst-rated MUA video trend is supposed to be harmless, right?
But it wasn't in YouTuber Mariale Marrero's case. In a video she posted three days ago titled "I Went To The Worst Rated Makeup Artist In Las Vegas," she pays a visit to a local MUA and requests a fantasy makeup look with a dramatic cut crease. Throughout the video, Marrero paints the artist as somewhat snippy, unorganized, and inattentive to her agitated skin.
When the makeup was done, the finished product actually didn't look that bad, though Marrero nitpicked at small issues like a misplaced lash, fallout from the eye shadow, and a contour that she deemed was not intense enough.
But what was most concerning, however, was that Marrero said she ultimately contracted a skin infection that had to be treated with medicated topicals.
The family of the makeup artist in question discovered the video quickly.
And when they heard the things that were said, they weren't pleased — things quickly escalated from there. In a long post, a daughter of the MUA accused Marrero of lying for views.
"I know this person who did your makeup and we reviewed the video. This was all set up and you know it. All of the makeup that she uses is professional makeup and from a brand made by the school she got certified at which is Chino Hills, CA. You lied to all of your followers with comments you made about 'salmonella infested' and 'bacteria infested' and even showed her untidy workspace which was due to you rushing her so she could not organize everything," she wrote on Twitter.
And after Marrero criticized the makeup artist for having extremely limited availability, one of her daughters came to her defense explaining why that was.
"Wasn’t going to post this cause we don’t want the sympathy but she needs to know! You judged my moms availability but the reason she has that availability is to take care of her 17 year old daughter with special needs," she began.
"And now you’re trying to ruin what pays the roof over my sisters head, her doctors appointments and her medicine that keeps her alive!? You should be ashamed. She is her full time job!" she tweeted.
It ultimately made everyone feel terrible for the dedicated mother and makeup artist.
"What's happening to the world and humanity. I can't believe that people are ruining someone's life for popularity. That girl lied and all for what, for [redacted] views on YouTube. I'm disgusted," someone said.
But surprisingly, Marrero didn't back down.
Despite getting obliterated and being called a heartless and deceitful person, she maintained her stance.
"I’m sorry, I got a skin infection and went to a doctor. I didn’t think to contact your mother. If this offends you or her I apologize. I’m not lying and wish you and your mother would accept it so you could stop this from happening to another client. Please stop spreading hate," she responded in typical YouTuber fashion.
Marrero ultimately announced that she would be publicly apologizing per the request of the family.
But Twitter was critical.
"I’m waiting for her apology video. No make up, no cuts, probably 15 minutes long, her having fake tears, likely in her bedroom with poor lighting. Mark my words, this girl is gonna be that person," someone wrote.
And people were pretty right to predict a half-hearted apology on Marrero's part.
However, there were no tears involved. Instead, the YouTuber apologized to the family for her editing choices, explaining that at the time that she posted the video, she was angry about her skin infection. She insisted that as an immigrant she, too, can empathize with the Latina MUA who was simply trying to provide for her family and had no intention of offending anyone.
And though the MUA nor her family have responded to the apology, we have a strong feeling we won't have to wait long to hear their thoughts.
