Fans Aren’t Convinced By Nikkie Tutorials’ Positive Jeffree Star Concealer Review

When Nikkie Tutorials reviewed Jeffree Star's Blue Blood palette a few weeks back, the beauty community was immediately confused. When did the two become cool again? Who apologized to who? Would there be more future collabs? And while we don't have the answer to the first two questions, we can confirm the third, because Nikkie Tutorials just released yet another Jeffree Star Cosmetics review. This time she tried out the new Magic Star complexion products.

And while she raved over the eye shadow palette, we're not so convinced that she feels the same way about the new concealers and powders. We're not the only ones feeling this way; fans are reading right through this rather disingenuous YouTube tutorial.

Is it a reach?

When it comes to beauty YouTuber reviewers, Nikkie de Jager has an opinion that we trust.

So after thousands of requests to review Jeffree Star's new Magic Star collection, she finally obliged. "You have been asking me what I think of the new @jeffreestar concealers & setting powders……. click the link in my bio to find out! the truth!!" she said on her Instagram.

So us being the de Jager fans that we are, we quickly hit the play button.

Given that Star and de Jager just rekindled their friendship, it only makes sense that de Jager would review Star's new product. However, given that it's been quite a short amount of time that they've been back on good terms, we had a feeling that the review would only be so positive, and it appears we were right.

She gave the new concealers and setting powders a try.

Using other brands' foundation, eye shadow, blush, and highlighter, de Jager tested to how the JSC products held up against some of her other faves. Affectionately referring to herself as a "full-coverage hoe," she reminded us that Jouer concealer is her all-time favorite, making that the standard she hoped JSC would meet, if not surpass.

She quickly praised the sleek packaging and got straight to business.

The boujee packaging, as she called it, was both sleek and practical. In particular she mentioned the doe foot applicator of the concealer that has a hole in the middle to allow for extra product pickup.

After applying her Natasha Denona foundation, she was ready to try it out.

Initially, it seemed she was pleased with the product distribution.

With just one grab of product, she was able to highlight her entire face. She went in first with a deeper color to cover her dark spots (must we mention that the one layer did not fully achieve that), then went in with a lighter color for added coverage. During this time she also mentioned that unlike Jouer, which only needs one layer, JSC concealer needed two layers to highlight underneath her eyes.

The small critique seemed fine, we guess, but then came the powder.

It seemed like all de Jager really wanted to talk about was how much she loves the Fenty Beauty setting powders. And though she's said it's been her favorite since its launch earlier this year, seeing as Rihanna nor her beauty brand had anything to do with the premise of the video, it became quite obvious where the review was going.

After applying the JSC powder with a white sponge, she explained that the powder itself clumps if your blender is the least bit wet.

She showed where the powder had clumped together on her face during application. De Jager went on to explain that one has to wait until the powder dries down again to be able to dust it off the face without disrupting the rest of the makeup. And in what seemed like an attempt to keep the peace, she said that this happens with a lot of other powders she's tried, referencing NARS and Laura Mercier.

Yet again, she resorted to referencing and raving about other products just so she could avoid saying what we all knew she wanted to say about Star's Magic Star selection.

More comparisons followed.

De Jager compared the amount of product you get between Jouer and JSC, both of which are priced at $22. The verdict, as expected, is that Jouer gives a lot more bang for the buck and boasted much better coverage — yet another sign that de Jager may have been doing this video to continue to remain amicable with Star.

It became glaringly obvious that she was not the biggest fan of the new JSC range.

When she compared the JSC powder against the Fenty Beauty powder, though Fenty cost $10 more, she pointed out that it included a whopping 18 more grams of product. A detail that we believe, if de Jager truly liked the product, she would have left out. She even closed out the review telling people to do what's best for their pockets…. Well, OK.

People have certainly noticed.

There's a Reddit thread with almost 100 comments dedicated to analyzing de Jager's take on the product. "How did she manage to say that she prefers Jouer and Fenty in such a way that it still sounded like a rave review of these products?" asked a fan. "Someone is scared of pissing J* off but also doesn't want to be a big ol' liar lol," said another commenter.

If you ask our opinion, we don't think she liked the products at all, but given Star's extremely messy past and tendency to be less than pleasant, it's clear she just wants to keep the peace.
